Hi Daniel and welcome to the forum.

Generally speaking a motor will smoke if it’s badly overloaded or simply faulty.

I would check that the propshaft is not binding, and that any lock nuts are adjusted and nipped up tight. Also check that the motor coupling, is free.

I assume the correct voltage battery was used, and perhaps the 15 minutes was not spent at full throttle.

Also the motor may have been unsuitable for the prop you are using and is overloading the motor. A worthwhile purchase is a watt meter to check the current being pulled by the motor.

Was the motor brushed, or brushless to start with, and could we have some info on motor, battery, prop, size of tug etc.

Simply fitting a new motor may not cure your issues….

          Ashley.

            Welcome to the forum Daniel.

Firstly I think it would be useful to know a little bit more about the model you are dealing with. Can you tell us everything about the model and the propulsion gear/battery/propeller etc.. that you have fitted before we suggest a suitable motor?

Brushless might not even be the best way to go but we don't know until we know what we are dealing with.

Thank you for your replys the tug in question is a zwarte zee.

Was a brushed motor tug is 91cm and is using 320a esc and a 2s lipo battery .having pulled the motor today it looks like a 540 size and it's 15 years old this might be one of the problems ?

It seems rather unlikely that a 540 motor on 7.2v would be overloaded in a model like that. Ashley's suggestion that something might be binding in either the motor or the dvive train.

Have a read of this article by Glynn Guest which explains what to look for.

                    Daniel,

This one would probably be well matched to the boat and your 2S LiPo. 4.5 -15 volt range and low drain.

Supplied with or without a mount

I think that motor will do the job but you have the option of upping the battery to 3S if you want more power whilst still remaining within the motor specs.
