Being more of a sailing person I would like some advice on the motor on a Billing Nordkap.  I want it to be quite powerful as I am toying with the idea of trawling a net.   I bought a 2.5:1 geared 450 motor but it seems huge so I may have gone completely over the top.

I am now thinking that a 350 would be better?  By the way, I have no idea what 450 or 350 stands for.

      Advice much appreciated.

Have a look at the late Dave Milbourn’s article “But I don’t understand electronics” in the Hints & Tips on the forum. Its very good & gives a table of different motors & their applications at the end.

I would suggest a low Kv brushless would be the “modern” replacement for a geared motor. Something like cheap 28mm outrunner of 1000Kv would power a decent size prop without breaking sweat. Not sure how big a prop we are talking here?

On a 7.2v stick, you would only be talking of 7000 rpm.  One thing a geared unit does get you is good low speed control. I have a big 2 blade 60mm paddle shaped prop on the London powered by a 2.5:1 geared 540 motor and you can get some very low revs on it, barely moving (so you can admire the prop).

Obviously towing a trawl net calls for oomph, and these cheap brushless deliver well over 100 watts normally which is good compared to the output of a “normal ” 540, or even a 600.

Thank you Ashley.  I will check the prop size.  It is the biggest I could fit in the aperture and probably twice the size of the one in the kit.

                Hi Ashley

The motor is an MFA Como Drills 919D Series

It seems to be rated 2,900 rpm at 6v

The prop is four bladed and measure 58mm diameter so probably a 60mm in the brochure.

The 919d series has a 540/1 motor. This a very  low powered 500 can sized unit, however the gearing will up the torque by quite a bit. Obviously running it with 7.2 stick will get you a bit more, and the motor is capable of 12v doubling the speed.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>Depending on the pitch ( and some of these big 4 blade props can be a bit anemic) a 28mm motor might be pushed however on 6v it will likely cope.</p>
If you have a 3s battery then powering the 919 with it would give you enough oomph without any worry.

                    Brilliant Ashley

                    Thanks very much

Once Ray has stopped flooding me with work I will get back to building Nordkap!
