I'm making a wooden boat based off of the toy boats that rent for the ponds in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. My original keel was WAY too small so I went with a larger one – but it still won't float upright. I think I need to add weight to the keel but I'm unsure what to use/ how much to add.

The Tuileries boat looks like it has some sort of lead weight…

      Thoughts? Thanks for your help…

          Hi Billy,

If it's any help I'm using internal (lead) ballast on the Pilot Cutter plus, a detachable steel keel.

I'm not sure what type of construction your boat is but the others may be able to help…

          Regards,

          Dave

            Hello Billy

I can't see the photos. You need to check on the instructions on how to create an album and then how to transfer the photos into your posts.

How long is the boat and what does it weigh at the moment. Dimensions of your keel would also help.

              Hi Tim-

The photos are hosted on my website. Not sure why they aren't showing up. This is the direct link: http://www.theallens.theallens.com/sylsboat.JPG

I'll try to do an album.

              Billy

So, yesterday I hit on the idea of using spring clamps to figure out how much weight I will need. Two seemed to do the trick – now all I need to do is weigh them and figure out what to use.

Go to your local tyre shop and beg a strip of tyre balancing weights, they are self adhesive, stick the requiered amount in equal amounts on either side of the keel fin.

Cool idea. I'll give it a shot!

If, per chance, the tyre depot isn't coming up trumps, I got my last weights from Cornwall Model Boats. They can probably supply most of your other needs as well…

                        Cheers,

                        Dave

Oops, slight slip-up there…..on checking the delivery notes, the weights came from T9 Hobbysport (Bradford). Cornwall MB supplied the motor, shaft and ESC…

                            Thanks Dave!

Being in the US, I just ordered these from Amazon. Lead-free and black in 1 oz segments. I need 13 or 14 oz to offset the pitch I think. (clamps weighed 13.2 oz)
