        Hello Geoff

The veneer is only 0.022″ and needs to be slid about….so PVA is OK for that.

The main problem is holding a long strip down on a compound curve……I`m nearly there now!

On the sanding lark, as you have obviously achieved a babies bottom finish in the substrate, then that thin veneer should hardly need ANY sanding to achieve, or rather keep the b/bott finish..?

good tip, sand the varnish, and not neccessarily the wood. Same goes for paint undercoats and things,by and large.

Unfortuneately…….I used steel blocks to hold the veneer down in places and got a few black stains from the PVA………………Very annoying……..Luckily, most of the stains are under the painted sections………..My patience is as thin as this veneer!

Still got a few veneers at the front to do and the sides to sort out yet

Anybody out there…….Got any information on Flexible drive shafts?

It appears that there are model boat drive shafts available that are mounted in the normal manner,  inside the hull, but underneath the hull, on the outside, these shafts can be bent into the horizontal, to allow for surface piercing props

Might be suitable for my SMS?………………….Bob

It might sound daft but I used a flexible 1/2in drill drive on a 4ft Huntsman and it worked a treat…..cheap to.

Thank you for the kinky idea, Paul, but the flexi shafts I`m on about. are a “must have feature”, really!…………..Need to know how much they cost…….my expert pal will know, but I don`t want to get too involved with the drive gear yet

Nice to see you back on the forum, Matey Boy……You had me a bit worried!

Still slappin` on the veneer, with about another weeks work before I need to study your “Varnishing article”

Keep looking at the beast nowadays and trying to imagine the bow wave at Etherow…….that could put the “Mokkers” on it!

Could be a good excuse for going slow?????

I was really referring to a chap in the club, a few years ago, sailed a giant lifeboat that caused a giant wave that sometimes washed onto the landing stage and the members shoes!

Was a bit of a laugh at first….then the novelty wore off….and had a few words with the Inquisitional committee!…………and parted company with the club……..and he was the Club Commodore at the time!

Slo Mo is much bigger than the aforesaid lifeboat!………………I will have to tread carefully!

Pierre referred to the mental difficulty of completing his models, on a previous thread, through lack on interest!

….And I`m putting off adding the last four veneer strips….Just can`t face it at the moment

Going to make a start on the rudder mechanism……..Hmmmmm………Now, is it one rudder or two?………Hmmm………Decision time again!

Get it finished and sealed before the damp winter weather gets into the veneer.

I`ll do them shortly……………………And it`s bone dry up here
With the veneer being only 0.22″ thick, I`ll hoping that the glue stains will sand off!…….So I`m delaying the moment of truth!

I like your recent photo Bob, she looks as if she can’t wait to hit the water! I know what you mean about veneering, I built a sailing boat hull by double diagonal planking some 12 years ago and it still languishes in its storage box on the shelf in the garage. My boating  interest changes.

BoB, I suggest a bit of surfing and calling up of shops to see how much the flexi drive costs as the easiest way out?

Go with two rudders. Looks twice as good, is twice as tricky to make, takes twice as long.Costs twice as much and has twice as much to go wrong, is twice as tricky to get setup right, BUT GUARANTEES no steering problems on the water at high speed (!) when turning either way.

The speedy boys have these offset for possibly a good reason? I read you get a better turning perfomance if an air rudder is offset slightly viz the twin fins on an SRN4 hovercraft.

It will be two rudders now, because, like yourself, I like to see a bit of impressive complication at the back end!………………In engine turned gleaming ali!

The boat is being built for visual appearance rather than speed.

That certainly is quick and from the last seconds of the clip I’m not convinced they got it back in one piece and if they did then only just the pilot obviously wasn’t watching where he was heading to carefully

I am not sure a nicely built and varnished boat is going to be in the Black Swan class??  and I am not sure about the way the video  clip boat was skipping around on the water, although it was a prototype..

One of the things I wanted from the Fantome was that “planted” look on the water at speed. Ploughing through rather than skipping along.

BUT for that sort of speed you need light weight and thus the susceptibility to waves and such.

                                                    Hello Ashley

I won`t be dashing about the water, like the models on the videos……..The Committee would not be pleased………Anyway, the sheer cost prevents this!

Just fancy stooging about the pond and hopefully growling like a mad dog…….No, not me!………The sound system!………..A surface piercing prop may be impressive.

Flexible prop shafts may be advisable at this stage……in case I venture into the Brushless motor syndrome later on?

Just a thought……Would choppy water help to get on the plane?
