Ripple type effect on hull plates of Warship

Hi,

I always see this ripple type effect on the hull plates of warships everytime I look at the photographs on Mr Dave Wooley’s Rangefinder columns. I remember him explaining the effect in detail once on his Rangefinder column but can’t remember what was the reason behind this. You don’t seem to see this on commercial vessels. Hope the members here can help demystify this.

i think its because of the welding technique and close frame spacing on a warship, and u do get it on merchant vessels
