Motor Cooling

I am (slowly) building a 28″ 1/24th semi-scale patrol boat and wanting a bit of speed have got a Graupner Speed 600 Race motor. Will I need to water cool it, or will it be alright as is? Also, what prop would suit?

I am currently building an MTB with two of these motors. Westbourne Models supplied them and have told me W/C may not be necessary however I have purchased to w.c coils which I may fit. These will require a water scoop pickup just behind each prop however these may be prone to picking up weed, a problem on our sailing water.

 Many people now use small electric fans to force an airflow over the motors.

 

As to pops I was advised to purchase Graupner 2 bladed hydro props  of about 36mm diameter.

If you run the motor on 12 volts you will most probably need water cooling via a scoop as suggested above.  You can now but readymade aluminium coils that fit the motor.

 

On my latest model I have made the cooling coils by getting the aluminium tube(5/32″), filling with salt, blocking the ends with tape and then rolling the tube around something with a slightly smaller diameter than the motor.  You will then need to get the salt out.  Light tapping and a little patience.
