Since the decks on "Vanity" are meant to represent scrubbed teak, I will need a matt finish. Can anyone recommend a waterproof matt varnish/lacquer that will set reliably flat, please.

      Cheers,

      Martin

Try Ronseal Polyurethane Mattcoat. (The solvent version – don't use the quick dry type). Rustins and Blackfriar do similar matt varnishes. You will probably need to go to an old style ironmongers to find it in small tins as the big DiY stores now mainly only sell the acrylic quick dry type.

There will be a very slight tint as with almost all solvent based varnishes. The interior version is best and will be perfectly OK for a model. The exterior version contains anti UV filters and is slightly yellower.

Splendid. Many thanks, Colin. I take it by solvent version, you mean effectively oil based, with that distinctive smell. Longish drying time.

A slight tint isn't a problem as scrubbed teak can change it's colour dependent on the weather and how often it's been scrubbed!

            Cheers,

            Martin

That's it, the smelly long drying stuff!

Be sure to stir it well to get the full matt effect.

Lovely stuff, Colin. I wish I wanted the gloss stuff because I already have some of that. I bought it as fuel proofer for a model aircraft. But these decks must be matt. I shall get some.

                Thanks again.
