I am trying to locate a completed model of the Halmatic 65 as described in Marine Modelling, 1989. I started building one around 1993 and completed the hull, motors, props, etc. and was able to test it a few times. However circumstances changed and the project was shelved (literally). I am now keen to start again over the coming winter. I am seeking good colour photos of a completed model since the monochrome photos in the original magazine are small and indistinct. If you have such a model, or know of one, please let me know. The original model as described in the magazine was built by someone from Histon near Cambridge.

Hi John and welcome to the forum.

I hate to see a post unanswered, however it appears either the usual posters do not have the info you require, or the “right” person has not seen your post.

Failing pictures of the model (I presume the internet has not thrown any up) are there pictures of the real thing you could use?

            Thank you, Ashley.

I have had the same no response on Model Boats Mayhem, so I am guessing that the original has disappeared and no-one else tried to build one ! I have done quite a bit of google searching and not found anything yet. The "Halmatic" actually refers to the builders, an English firm subsequently absorbed into BAE marine systems. The US coast guard have classes of boats so the manufacturers name doesn't register. I have looked through many photos of full size and model "patrol" boats and none seem to match. The original model had a docking bay in the stern to house an inflatable-type daughter boat which could be deployed and recovered, but I have found nothing with that facility.

I think I will have to "Bite the bullet" and go ahead as best I can. At least there seems little chance of being told I got it wrong, if there is nothing to compare it with ! When tested it performed very well having no problem with planing at speed so I think it will be worth the effort.

John. Good call. If no other material exists, your build will be spot on! Stern ramp detail can be taken from similar vessels, I would think these sorts of things are very similar.

it would be handy for a photo to see what we are looking for, as Halmatic built a lot of hulls for lifeboats, but i dont thik that any were 64' in length,

if you could post a picture of what you are after, it would help.

                  OK,

The best I can do is a scanned copy of the monochrome photo in the original Marine Modelling magazine. The overall shape is also given in the plans which I bought at the time, but the detail of the superstructure, gun, and internals is indistinct. The article promised further detail at a later date, but that never materialised. Hence my quest. As i said in a previous post the design includes a stern ramp for a smaller boat to operate from, but this is not obvious from the photo.

Whoops – can't add a photo. I created an album and added a photos but when I try to add to this post it says ino albums found. However, if you look in albums (on the dark blue bar) and select JF Boats you will see the photo there. Still not a good image due to restrictions on file size.

Looked up the article John and checked in all my articles listing the USCG boats from around that time – sourced from various UK , US & French magazines – the Halmatic was definitely never used by the USCG – so as the article says it was purely finished in USCG guise as the builder liked the colour scheme.

Trawled the web extensively with no sign of any military versions of the 65 – lots of flying bridge types for deep sea sport fishing however.

Unfortunately my plan is also very indistinct other than the basic hull, but you could refer to the German Rescue Boats for ideas on the daughter boat . Armament from the USCG 41 ft utility boats would suit – plethora of pictures of those on the web . The 82ft Point Class armament might be a little much for the scale..

Also checked Sarik for the plan – not listed as far as I can see

Thanks very much for your efforts and research. That does explain a lot. I do have a set of plans from the time, with which I built the hull. I am happy now that I can complete it more or less how I want – I just need to be a bit inventive. As you might guess I am not a frequent boat builder, so I probably took a risk tackling this in the first place, but I still think it is a worthwhile project. I will research the other boat types you suggest and see what I can do.

If I get it something like over the Winter, I will post photos – watch this space.

Thanks to everyone for your for your help,

                      John
