          Hi William,

I am contemplating a Caldercraft 'Brannaren' Swedish costal tanker kit as my next build. It will be a radio controlled sailing model.

I have not done a Caldercraft kit before and prior to investing would like to know what to expect in terms of: contents of the kit, quality of the parts, build details and overall finished appearance.

          Hoping you can help.

          Regards,

          Denzil

            Hi Denzil,

I loved building the "Yankee Star" (Milford Star) Caldercraft kit. Although it's always an option for a kitbuilder to purchase extra detail castings, this kit did not really require any. It came with loads of decent quality castings, wood, plastic and a fibreglas hull. Have you seen the photos of my build? If so, you'll see what results you can get with a stock build. I did add some rivets to the hull. I'd say you need to be on the level of "experienced modeler" to complete a Caldercraft kit with satisfaction.

            Hope this helps,
Good luck with the build and please send photos!!
            Bill C

                Hi William,

                Many thanks for your reply.

Your model looks really good and the weathering is fantastic, great job.

I have been modelling for over 40years but the 'Brannaren' will be only my second large scale model boat.

My first was a Mountfleet 'Danny Boy' drifter. That was a real nightmare, the Instructions might as well as been in Hindi for all the use they were, the plan had loads of errors, the printed wood bore a slight resemblance to the required finished shape and the white metal castings were very poor quality. I made a reasonable job of it over 18 months, sailed it 8 times and sold it on, very disappointed with Mountfleet Models, hence the move to the Caldercraft range.

This is why I was unsure what Caldercraft kits were like, but yourself and Cornwall Model Boats (good company) have given me confidence to go ahead.

Should be making a start on it in November and will keep you posted. (may need a bit of advice also).

                Cheers,

                Denzil

                  Thank you Denzil,

This model display was done for the Museum of New Jersey Maritime History. It dipicts a ship gone aground and a life saving operation in progress. This was quite commonplace for hundreds of years at the barrier islands of the NJ shoreline.

                  Cheers!

                  ~Bill C

I've 3 albums of other pics of models I've made on my FaceBook page if you're interested…
