Oooh goodies. Its always a nice feeling when you buy bits for the latest build.

      Hows the sanding going.

Hi. Ray yes, you are getting on when you start fitting out.

Just checked the wieght of my hull 350 grams, I need to finish a couple of dumb barges and a log boom for my tug before I do much more to my Cossack.

        Regards.

        Eddie.

          Hi Eddie,

Good show, as we said from the outset we are not racing, life seems pretty hectic at the moment with work and my wife retiring and grandchildren in the school holidays! perhaps we should take the month off as the Formula 1 teams do ?

          All the best

            Good evening Cossacks,

Well i couldn't resist trying a flotation test with the hull wrapped in cling film, down to her water line took 10.6 lbs of assorted weights that's 4,850 grams, so we probably didn't need the extra 1/2" hull depth ! I will be going for steel plates sprayed and laid in the bilges. I now think glass cloth inside the hull a good idea, and lightweight on the outside to give the Balsa the strength required.

            Regards Ray

Hi. Ray, that's a lot of weight for a comparatively small hull, but with most ofthat in the bottom she should be stable.

I think you are right about heavy weight glass cloth on the inside,we don't want the bottom dropping outblush do we?

I will also go with my favourite lead shot held in place with resin, that is when I get to that stage,

I came home from boating today with another project, one of our members bought a cheap? yacht at the Mayhem weekend, first time out the mast collapsed, he has spent a few weeks trying to fix it without much success, so it is now in my dining room being re-rigged, plus a new gooseneck, kicking strap and sail booms, me and my big mouth!

              Regards.

              Eddie.

                    Good evening Cossacks,

Not much progress this weekend, put a coat of Bucks Composites laminating resin in the bilges, just to protect the Balsa 😀

                      coss waterline.jpgHi All,

Here is my way of marking the waterline, and with the clingfilm wrapper the first voyage in the bath !! without the ballast in this photo, I'm going down the lightweight glass cloth and water based resin sealer on the hull, less messy than epoxy

                        Looking good Ray,

Can't wait to clear the decks and start mine, I might go down the route of ply frames and 0.8 ply skin for the hull and lose that half inch, any thoughts gentlemen?

                        Regards

hi there – feel a bit of a traitor to the Cossack cause – as it was going to be my next build. However, on Sunday someone waved a red flag to a bull – cos he had a ready to run brushless speed boat saying that it was the fastest thing on this lake well that answered my question – what to do next – so I promise I will finish this build and then look at the Cossack build – watching this every day so Ray keep the photographs coming of the build.

Just as a side note did you ever consider Vic Smeed's castle corvette that was a free build in the magazine a good few year ago.

Hi John, yes definitely traitor, you could have put some big motors in the Tribal class and really put his nose out, never mind as long as you promise it's next. wink.

I've only just started so haven't seen that one sad

                              Hello John,

No problem, I enjoy the building, fast boats are great, I must have a go at a Cigarette off shore power boat 😀 at some stage.

Thanks for the heads up on the Castle Class Corvette, didn't realize there was one named Allington Castle which is near me in Kent, maybe slightly smaller than a destroyer 1/48th scale wood be good 😀

                              Regards Ray

                                Hi Ray,

I'm confused (which is easily done sad) Cossack is 377 feet and a Castle Class Corvette is 252 feet, thought that would be an appreciable difference in length?

                                Regards

                                    Hi Roger,

Sorry for the confusion, Cossack is 48" long at 1 /96th so the Castle Class will be 32" long at the same scale.

however at 1/48th scale the Castle Class will be 64" long, good size for a model 😀

are you taking the Cossack drawings on holiday ? I find it's a great time to trace the parts.

                                    Regards Ray

No need to be sorry, I'm easily confused sad, 1/72nd would work well cheeky.

I gave a feeling that if I take the drawings on holiday it might clash with all the plans that the missus has worked hard for weeks to cover sun, rain and even snow, ummm did I miss anything darling? Only certain thing is I'll need a holiday when I come back. laugh I have been allowed to take my Flying Eagle though smiley

                                        coss 1408 cloth.jpgHi All,

Trying the water based resin from Bucks Composites is much easier to apply, but I probably need 10 coats to build it up and fill the weave in the lightweight glass cloth

Trimmed off the excess cloth this morning looking good so far, doing the other side tonight.

                                            Hi Brian,

Primarily been used for covering model aeroplane wings , no shrinkage involved just brush the resin through it. Takes compound curves well. Epoxy resin maybe slightly stronger, but is in my experience a messy expensive experience.
