Hi guys, I'm not hiding under a rock, just been very busy with home stuff and finishing off my 1938 Denham lathe restoration as I have a 15" flywheel to machine.

The workshop is nearly almost tidy now, most of the boats are in the workshop attic, just some flotsam and jetsam to sort and I'll be starting the Tribal class destroyer alongside restoring/completing the Modav 34" Hunstman 31' that I collected off Colin at Warwick.

Looking good Eddie, you'll have to come over and give me a hand and show me how it's done laugh.

        Regards

        Roger

          Hi Roger,

          That's a mighty big flywheel !

Are you building a a traction engine ??

Hi Ray, haha, no it's for a Aermotor 1/2 scale 8 cycle hit 'n' miss engine and there's a typo in there, should have been 10.25", batteries in my keyboard were dying, at least that's my excuse laugh, more info here.

I seem to be getting less time in the workshop the closer xmas looms, never mind got the rest of my life to get Brexit/stuff done laugh

            All good at yours?

Hi. Roger/ Ray, not sure that I can show enyone how it's done, the number of times I have to keep remaking bitsindecision as I see a better way of doing it or a different picture turns up giving more information.

Ray there is nothing like being thrown in at the deep endsurprise, but I have been giving your suggestion some thought,

I think there can be only two builds to complement our Cossacks, they are a Vic or a Tramp steamer, the first at 1/96 would be too small so the only one left is the Tramp,, and that has been offered to us on a plate, well in MB January this year,' Pertram,' scale it down to 1/96 gives us a model 28.5 inches long by 4.5 inch beam, and the build is very similar to Cossack, so three or four of those in convoy and away we gosmiley.

I will take my drawings to the copy shop on Monday to see how they turn out and will let you know.

              Regards to all.

              Eddie.

                Hi Guys,

I have a long list as you will imagine, but I'm back on my sailing cat at the moment, with an offshore power boat on the drawing board 😀I

Like that Ray, although I'm still very fond of that little (Dutch-style?) yacht of yours. Can't for the life of me remember its name. Blue hull; clog shape; lovely.

You must be thinking of Wild Duck she is pretty little yacht 😀 good luck with the flying this morning, your made of sterner stuff than me, blooming brass monkey's looking for a welder ! & a stiff breeze.

Just been musing on the turrets. They are a tricky shape…not tricky per se, but tricky to make 4 all the same!

I would have made a rubber mould and cast them in resin I think if I were making the boat.

(just thought I would add that !)

                        Hi Ashley,

Never to late to join the party, I have some spare prints of the enlarged Cossack drawing, the way Vic shows the turrets are with tarpaulin covers over the barrels and the open gun breach's to the rear.

The more ideas the merrier 😀😀

                        Regards Ray

Hi,. Ashley, the only problem I had with the gun turrets is that they are more angular than shown on the drawing, so I had to make them twice!

Ray, just got back from a morning sail, wind was quite strong and cold but gave some good sailing, although my Racing Sparrow acted more like a submarine running down wind, a hot soup and coffee in the on site cafe soon got the circulation going again, plus a slice of home made ginger cake from one of our ladies makes it all worth while.

                          Regards.

I like the central island layout of that plan, I built a smaller steam coaster called Briarfield which I've always fancied a larger version at 48" long with a steam plant 😀

                                  Hi Eddie,

Here is my part built Blackgates V twin ossilator only needs ports & pipework, I had thought about running it off a airbrush propellant can of compressed air, as we don't do steam @ Bluewater 😢 do you think it would run for long??

I'm hoping being double acting it will self start?

Hi Ray, yes it will self start and is reversible as well, I think pressurised air won't last any appreciable time, especially with a hoscillator, they tend to gallop along a bit but why can't you run steam?

I have 2 of them laugh

                                      Hi Roger,

Members with the knowledge and experience to be boiler testers are fairly non existent outside model engineering societies down this way, I agree with the requirement for locomotives doing public running for public liability insurance, but the danger of an accident with a meths the fired boiler with half a pint of water to be negligible, but rules are taking over from common sense these days. I steam my loco's in the back garden completely safely for the last 50 years, recently for the grandkids they love putting coal on a real fire 😀

I did build a TID tug with a centre flue boiler never did trust the gas blow lamp enough to run it on open water, as if it got stuck and run dry the lamp could have melted the silver soldered cross tubes and turned it into a flash steamer !!

                                      Regards Ray

                                          Hi Roger,

I'm sure ban is the wrong word to use as I don't know the rules exactly , I think in the past some members were also in the Gravesend MES and could certify boilers. I don't think there is any interest in steam, it's only electric and sailing and everybody is happy with that 😀 Chantry club at Bluewater is a great bunch of people.Regards

Next year it will be the main location of Thames Barge Sailing with AMBO racing.

HI. Ray Roger, I have volume 1 of the current boiler test code 2018, but this only deals with boilers from 3 to 1100 bar litres, volume 2 is for boilers upto 3 bar litres and I do not have a copy of that, so you would need to see a copy of that to check the current requirements for small boilers and gas tanks.

As Roger says a compressed air can will only run that engine for a very short time, even at only 30 psi through a regulator.

                                            Regards.

Well after you kindly sent me the drawings for Cossack to make i caught the sailing bug. I now have three yachts which is one short of the classes that they sail at Batley (rofwacs). So that is likely my next build. I have to say though i must not have a much spare time as you chaps. My builds take for ever.

If you were to propose some simple smaller boat i may be able to have a bash with you. A chine boat like a police launch?
