Hello folks, I just joined the forum and hope to be able to pick people's brains. As I am about to retire I have returned to model boats after a rather long time away ( 25 years??). Currently fitting out a proper workshop in the garage while finishing off models rescued from the loft, going to do it properly this time, no more kitchen table!
I always wanted to have a sailing TSB, but I really havent got the space for a big 1:24 model. As a shortcut I bought an old r/c barge from eBay, built from the HFM kit on a 24-25 inch plastic hull. I've done a bit of restoration, repainting and extra detailing, and replaced the old 27Mhz gear.I dont want to race it as I am totally uncompetitive, just want to sail it and have it look right on the water.
I have got quite confused about scale. I understood that the big AMBO boats are 1:24 ( half-inch to the foot) with hulls about four feet long stem to sternpost.Scaling up, that indicates a hull length of around 95 feet. But as far as I can see from the books I have, only the "big four" Everard barges were that long , with most TSBs around 80-85 feet b.p. I have been told that the smaller AMBO barges are half the size of the big ones, i.e. 1:48 scale, but on an average TSB that would only give a hull length of 21inches or less, much smaller than the model that I have. I went looking for an AMBO website to check this out but there isnt one now. Can someone tell me if the AMBO classes are based on scale or just on maximum hull length?
