        Hi Eddie,

Gwen dragged me from the boatyard there were so many un-loved lost cause boats needing love & tlc !!!

But remembered the old adage the best sort of boat is somebody else's 😄I

Any lakes open down your way ??

        Regards Ray

          Hi All,

Well that's the barge complete some trimming a fettling required before a couple of coats of Poundland varnish to seal the ply , only going to use coal for ballast 👍 Cullamix weights in at 35 lbs so I use a trolley 😄

May give the union flag a miss !!

Hi. Ray, I can just hear Gwen saying that you have more than enough boats.
We went to have a look at Ramsgate pond but that was still covered in blanket weed. we are gong up to Hearne Bay this afternoon to have a look at that water.

Cullamix looks good, she’s pushing quite a lot of water in front of her.

            Regards to you both.

            Eddie.

                Hi All,

Here we have an interesting comparison between Portlight & the swim head barge both at the scale 1/24th scale now forge ahead with the sailing barge 😄👍

Hello folks, I just joined the forum and hope to be able to pick people's brains. As I am about to retire I have returned to model boats after a rather long time away ( 25 years??). Currently fitting out a proper workshop in the garage while finishing off models rescued from the loft, going to do it properly this time, no more kitchen table!

I always wanted to have a sailing TSB, but I really havent got the space for a big 1:24 model. As a shortcut I bought an old r/c barge from eBay, built from the HFM kit on a 24-25 inch plastic hull. I've done a bit of restoration, repainting and extra detailing, and replaced the old 27Mhz gear.I dont want to race it as I am totally uncompetitive, just want to sail it and have it look right on the water.

I have got quite confused about scale. I understood that the big AMBO boats are 1:24 ( half-inch to the foot) with hulls about four feet long stem to sternpost.Scaling up, that indicates a hull length of around 95 feet. But as far as I can see from the books I have, only the "big four" Everard barges were that long , with most TSBs around 80-85 feet b.p. I have been told that the smaller AMBO barges are half the size of the big ones, i.e. 1:48 scale, but on an average TSB that would only give a hull length of 21inches or less, much smaller than the model that I have. I went looking for an AMBO website to check this out but there isnt one now. Can someone tell me if the AMBO classes are based on scale or just on maximum hull length?

                      Hello Steve,

You maybe interested in the 30" long class scaled @ 1 – 32nd , have a look at the beginning of this thread my build of Giralda on a grp hull now available from Dave Watts aka Mastman who sells hull & fittings.

As Dave says AMBO is alive (just) you don't need to be phased by racing, it's not like model yacht racing !! Here are the 42" stay sail class & the 30" for comparison.

                      Where about'sv&g@mote parkmay18.jpg are you located ??

                      Regards Ray

Thanks Dave and Ray. So are the 42" and 30" classes based on hull length between perpendiculars or length overall to include rudder and bowsprit if fitted ?

How do I add a photo? can't seem to see an obvious way to do it.

                                You are a speedy builder

I often think that model tugs need to have plenty of prop wash, to create the illusion of power etc

How about trying a prop with holes in the blades?

                                Just an idea

30”                                      Approx. 1/35th – 1/40th scale with a hull length under 30”, a class originally based on the HFM KATHLEEN and including the Richard Webb KITTY semi-scale model but now encompassing all small barges.

Unless you are building a true scale model in respect of hull form, sail plan and rigging – then the following specification should be followed:

                                   30” class
                                   Hull length                    Under 30”
                                   Mast Height                  Under 30”
                                   Head Stick                    Under 3 ½”
                                   Sprit                             maximum 22 ½”

The above standardisation of specification is an attempt to prevent ‘super large’ non scale rigs being used and causing arguments on the fairness of the racing – unless on a scale model of a barge that sailed with a ‘big rig’.

Therefore do not be disturbed if you see a tape measure being taken to various parts of your barge during a meeting!    12”                      Fun class with 12” hull length in either Bowsprit, Staysail or Coastal configuration

                                      Hi Tom,

The measurement of barges may have been so in the early years of AMBO but now it's just pleasing to see a few barges turn up for a match !!

Big or small rigs make very little difference these days as we know Peter Simmonds wins most of the race's, although Dave Watts & I now can give him a run for his money on a good day

                                                      Hi All,

Making the gudgeons to hang the rudder on from square brass bar turned down to 138 thou and threaded 4 ba to screw into the transom of Portlight, and remembered how easy it is with a 4 jaw self centering Chuck on the lathe 😀

                                                      Regards Rayimg_20200706_164602.jpg
