Tamiya Yamaha Round the World Yacht – the ultimate model sailing yacht.
This is a very rare opportunity not only to own one of the finest model racing yachts ever made but also a piece of the history the model was produced to commemorate.
The 1/20 scale model was produced by Tamiya on behalf of Yamaha to celebrate their sponsorship of the class winning Whitbred 60, 1993-1994 Round the World Yacht ‘YAMAHA’.
This particular model was professionally built and supplied by Tamiya to be used alongside the real yacht at Ocean Village Marina in Southampton where it was moored until it departed to start the race in 1993. The model is supplied with pictures of both Ross Field (the yacht skipper) and the President of Yamaha at the time in control of the model yacht from the pontoon alongside the real Yamaha as well as lots of other shots of the real boat.
The yacht has not been sailed since that day. It has been kept in very good condition within my home and has been a display model since. It includes the crew kit, which was rare even when the model was in production.
I have had estimates of value but a professionally assembled kit with radio gear and crew stands at around £1,000 – but bear in mind these are not in production any more and kits are snapped up when they do appear.
The model is highly detailed and uses scale spincloth made from the same sail material used on the real yacht. The radio gear and servos have not been tested in a long time but were working fine. The performance on the water by all reports is superb and will outsail pretty much anything you put it up against.
Please note that when on the stand this model measures over 6 foot tall from the bottom of the keel to the top of the mast, however, the rudder, keel and mast can all be removed easily for transport and storage.
I also have all the original documentation, brochure and build manual for the model. The auction also includes the radio gear including special remote control with sail set function.
The boat is for sale on ebay, however I will accept and consider offers via this advert…
