Stean clipper – Early 1860s

I have now practically given up on ship modelling owing to a combination of advancing age, growing allergy to glue fumes, and a general decline in interest, possibly caused by the international financial crisis. Instead, I am concentrating on writing, and preparing my own plans suitable for model shipbuilding. My present drawing (In progress) is of a large passenger steam clipper of the early 1860s. As well as having a powerful engine, driving a single screw, this ship carried a substantial barque rig, including studding sails on the topsails and t'gallants.

It was pretty grim inside it. Hundreds of passengers. The only single berth cabins were captain, chief engineer. and chief officer. The 2nd & 3rd engineers shared a cabin, as did the 4th and fifth engineers, 2nd and 3rd officers, 4th and fifth officers.

The hull was 290 feet long, and the service speed under steam was 12 knots, on 45 tons of coal a day. But she could function very well as a sailing ship, if the wind was right. Even carried stunsails on the topsails & t'gallants.
