      Morning Phil

That`s a nice little touch, re-enacting a group of Land diggers!………..I spotted the little group scenario right away as it looked nicely arranged….well done

The Great Eastern also had an open Captains bridge and it does mention in the archives, that it was to prevent the crew falling asleep!

Phil, your use and spelling of the word ‘landligger’ is correct, and these boats where much used for traveling during summer holidays.  The term ‘Papa-boat’ was also used on the Oslo-area because the father was still working when the rest of the family was on a holiday.  on Friday he (the papa) used the ‘papa-boat’ to get back to his family and stayed for the weekend.

I see that you want a new name on your ship.  Very often this boats were named after places, fjords, sounds or other geographical  names from the area it was operating.  If you want a typical Norwegian name on your ship, use google maps or something similar and you will get a lot of suggestions.

I forgot to add that your model of Noggsund is a beauty.  I’m planning to build one myself, and your thread has given me a lot of inspiration.

Thakyou for your kind words Tore. most of my knowledge of these ships comes from Mike Bents book “Steamers of the fjords” a very informative volume it is too. The idea for taking inspiration for her name from a Norwegian map is great, as this model is not of any particular ship but more a representation of the genre, I want to ere on the cautious side and try and find an attractive suitably Norwegian name, that is not likely to be attributable to any real ship of the period. As a native Norwegian  perhaps you would like to make a suggestion or two!

I have made a list with name suggestions . I found this quite amusing, so the list got quite long.  Therefore i sent it as a PM instead of putting it here and hijack your thread.  If you don’t mind I can put it out here as well.

Hi Tore I’ve replied to your pm once again many thanks for some excellent ideas so everyone knows I’m going with a translation of the club name “Tone Valley” into norwegian so she will become “SS   Tondalen”  which funnily enough is almost the name of the next village to us Tonedale still lots of nordic influences in our language eh?

That’s an excellent name for your ship, Phil.  I’m very glad that one of my suggestions was helpful.

Thankyou Tore both for your kind comments and those most usefull suggestions. It’s quite suprising how much our language has been influenced by the Norwegian language there are examples everywhere if you know where to look. Now I’d like to test something. there is a word used exsclusively in the barnsley area of yorkshire where I was born. and I’m told it  is Norwegian in origin so I wonder can you identify the meaning the word is Laik I’ll be interested to know if it is norwegian and if it is do the Barnsley children use it correctly

The language discussion is maybe a little off topic…

The word ‘Laik’ sounds like the Norwegian word ‘Leik’ or ‘Lek’  that means playing, like in the sentence ‘come out and play with us’  My guess is that it  has something to do with playing or gaming.  It might also be used in the meaning of a joke, prank.  ‘Leik’ can also mean ‘Dance’

Hello Tore long time no speak hope all is well in your bit off the world? To play is the meaning that folks in Barnsley use Laik for. The spelling difference is probably down to generations of Barnsleyites spelling “As it sounds”. Funny how it is a word that has only survived in such a small area of our country in almost pure form. Also a change in spelling is almost inevitable as it was introduced before the majority could read and write.

                            Hi Phil,

I grew up in Halifax, West Yorkshire in the 1960’s and the word was in common use.  I can vaguely remember a series of programs introduced by Fred Trueman about Yorkshire customs, probably about 1969/70.  One of these was about the old Yorkshire game of ‘Knurr and Spell’  and those who took part said that they were ‘laiking’ at the game.

Hiya Grumpy a fellow yorkshire man I agree 50yrs ago it was in wider use even possible as far as tyneside however while I was a scoutleader some 10yrs ago I camped in many places across the northern parts of England  and our boys were always being asked what it meant. Knurr and spell we used to call it nipsie a great simple game that required a good degree of skill and co-ordination. Pretty dangerous to if you got in the way of a well hit spell/nipsie. I got into some bother breaking street lights while laiking

well apart from the Life boats this model is done I’ve had to alter the gearing to 3:1 (as per plan) and I’ve increased the rudder size by app 30% to give a good response forward and allow a semblance of a straight line in reverse, That 2″ prop sure kicks her to stb in reverse. She was (just to rub it in for you Northerner’s Bob) out on the pond this afternoon and I got some very amateurish video if you want to see click this

Hi Bob thanks its not bad a little low in the water and slightly stern down but that can easily be sorted. The subject of smoke came up and I have seen somewhere on the web a smoke unit that would fit in the funnel. My only concern is the bty consumption issue prob be ok as the bty’s in her are 3300Mah jobs and she pulls about 1.5A with all 14 lights on so another amp for a smoke unit shouldn’t be out of the question.  I have now found out how to edit my movies so here’s the Directors cut

Thats not the game I remember maybe a crossing of names. nippsie as we knew it was much simpler it consisted of a block (typically a house brick on it’s side) on which was placed the “Nip” (a 150-200mm length of wood app 50x50mm square and sharpened at one end on all 4 sides) the sharpened end of the nip was struck hard with the bat causing the nip to leap into the air and before it fell to the ground the idea was to hit it with the bat and see how far it could be hit. Hence broken Street lamps  Thanks for the kind comments about the model.

Well Philip finally got the lifeboats made for the tonendale (new name in case you missed it earlier) So apart from a smoke unit (ahh more exspense) for the funnel she is officially complete just in time for a sail in the park at our proper club water tomorrow. Video of the event to follow.
