I have to admit that this is prob my favourite part of any build Bob, and this one is very pleasing indeed. Still some painting to do obviously and a crane and lifeboats to make the funnel is nearly ready to fit too.

            Hi Phil.

Looking at your boat it is super, I am trying to build this boat from the free plans in model boat,  BALSA ?(my first  try at building, can you tell me about the drive pulleysis this the way to go ? also what do you reccomend to seal the balsa hull,? last of all where do you buy the little people from.

            Regards,
            Brian

Hi Brian if I’d built with balsa I would simply have sealed it with thinned down varnish about 4 coats rubbed down with 240 grit sand paper/wet or dry used dry. then prob used a spray can of red primer. as I did with mine and then mask of below water line spray the black then mask the whole outer hull and use white on the decks. make sure you allow each colour a couple of days in a warm place (20/25c) to dry before masking. the smaller items on deck like the crane’s masts and funnel I brush painted before fitting then the finall step was a couple of coats of satin lacquer to give a uniform finish to the paints. the sprays I used were Acrylic colours from a car spares shop, cost me about a £5 er a tin and used only 3 in total with plenty left over. the thinned varnish will also adequately seal any card you may have used in the construction.

my pulleys were bought from here the larger ones have a 3.5mm hole through the centre and I threaded this to suit a 4mm threaded shaft then fitted it with a nut and washer either side. the little 10mm pulley has a 1.8mm pilot hole and this I drilled to a tight push fit onto my JP400 motor shaft.

              Hope this helps
              Phil

Ps nearly forgot about the figures they are HO scale figures bought from a model railway shop.

I,ve got a shot of the motor fitted here the mount is screwed to two bearers glued to the compartment base so the motor and mount can be easily removed as one unit. also I’ve added an anchor winch and the anchors.

Now the epoxy has dried I can show you the mount and motor removed hopefully this will make it clearer

At present I’ve fitted a 40 mm spur pulley and a 10 mm pinion pulley giving me a 4:1 reduction. if this proves too much there is a 30 and a 20 mm pulley in the bag.

Is that “Plastic paint” ….you`ve used on the bottom?……..It`s got a good finish!

Just got a can from Halfords for Slo Mo stand…never used it before

No Bob its Simoniz acrylic gloss white on a white acrylic primer the apearance of plastic may come from the fact its sprayed directly on to the coat of glass resin that I coated the entire hull with. in fact all the paints with the exception of the yellow are acrylic car sprays. Its good paint which doesn’t seem to react to any other paint just don’t overcoat acrylic with cellulose based paints. Thats a recipe for orange peel  guess how I know.

I’ve had the drive train powered up and it’s as smooth as silk. However the scales and a quick float test indicate that she wants some 2lb of ballast even with my heaviest 6s 2p 7.2v NiMh pack in (thats 12 sub C cells in series parralell) obviously I’ve built quite light for a change.

I have to say a big thankyou to Bob Wilson who sent me some photo’s of his method of making a ships wheel at this scale. It made the job so easy and the end result is quite effective as you can see in the photo. If any one wants to see how its done just ask.

Still a few bits to do Bob! 4 life boats a telegraph & binnacle, a couple of voice tubes and of course an esc and Rx. still on the bench is the homewood landing waiting for some more planking for the bottom boards then it wants a pump and the centre control console making. also on the bench and more urgent is a commission piece that’s required as an Xmas pressie for my friends young son its an own design fun tug that sized for our club’s steering competitions, its coming along well as you can see from the pics

I use a band saw for plank manufacture…….using a simple wooden side guide.

For hull construction…………….there`s no need to plane them either!

A band saw would be good Bob just a little expensive for our limited budget. Slow is good Brian and as long as you do a little each week then you will be sailing it one day. I sympathise with the stiff  joints thing mate I was told recently that I have the 1st signs of arthritis and to be honest am not looking forward to it getting worse. still that’s a way of yet as long as I keep doing the wrist exercises.

Well the Noggsund got its 1st outing today and it sails quite well looking very serene on our windswept little pond. two issues were highlighted 1st the 4:1 reduction is to much (she needs a tad more top speed) so the 40mm pulley needs replacing with a 30mm one (whichis the recomendation onthe plan)  also as reported by Glynn in his build article steering in reverse is difficult requiring full left rudder (45 degrees) to maintain a straight line so I think I’ll be trying out a larger rudder. unless anyone has any other sugestions.

Well time has passed and I haven’t had a chance to sail her on the new gearing but being snow bound I have had a chance to illuminate the Noggsund (must think up another name) and she looks the mutts n*&s all I’ve done is illuminate the covered decks with miniture bulbs and added nav lights and a funnel light and a standard lamp on the stern upper deck 12 lights so far, I will also fit two mast lights in time.

The photo’s don’t really show the true effect as the lower lights look to bright but they’re not really just a cheap camera

the lampost on the upper rear deck is particularly effictive

Thanks Bob very kind comments. Having read most of the recomended reading for this model, namely “Steamers of the fijords”by Mike Bent. That little family group would probably be “Landliggers” (norwegian city dwellers who purchase or rent country property for holiday purposes) en-route from Bergen to some small village or town in the upper reaches of one of Norways multitude of fijords (they are given away by the better style of dress and prob travelling 1st class) the elderly couple could well be returning from a shopping trip to the city and the sole gentleman probably some official of the steamer co or maybe a sales man visiting one of the industries located in the suburbs of the small towns dotted along the fijords. the fellows  on the Bridge are self explanatory. another snippet from the book concerns the open bridge and how many companies refused to fit covered wheelhouses to prevent helmsmen falling asleep after being on duty for shifts in excess of 12hrs with as little as 5hrs rest for up to a week! hard work being part of a steamer crew.
