Doubt it’ll stay that way long Bob. And funny you should open with that comment! Her who must be obeyed said those exact same words . I am going to try the resin on card technique with this one just to see how easy/hard/impossible it is but 1st I need some deck shots of a completed model to answer a few questions left by the plans

              Phil,

The Noggsund is a “typical” Scandinavian coaster model designed by Glynn Guest and is not intended to represent any specific prototype. Rather it is an amalgam of designs and illustrations published in Mike Bent’s book “Steamers of the Fjords” published in 1998. You may be able to obtain a copy here: http://www.antiqbook.co.uk/boox/humm/01_5951.shtml

You imply that you have the plans but not Glynn’s accompanying article in the August 2009 issue of Model Boats which was profusely illustrated with photos of construction and of the original model (plus the free plan of course!). If you are intending to build the model then I would recommend that you purchase the August issue from the back issues dept on this website, or by ringing customer services on 0844 848 8822 or by emailing them at customer.services@myhobbystore.com

There is also a picture of a Noggsund built by Larry Whetton in the November issue of the magazine which is due to hit the bookstands tomorrow.

              Hope this helps,

I had a copy of Steamers of the Fjords some time ago, and it is a wonderful book with amazing amounts of detailing……if you want to go down that road of Norwiegian steamers, it’s worth it’s weight in gold.

                    Hello to all on forum:
I have built this coastal freighter as of the plans from August Magazine.
Not happy with it size I doubled it and completed a second one.
                    lenght 51 1/4″  width apx 71/4″ depth 8.0″
It is constructed on 1/8″ plywood and 1/8″ stripped cedar.
only problem I had was forming the stern.
Will finish the hull in fiberglass and paint it later.I have decided to do the rails in brass and solder them together. Just trying to figure out how I will attach them. If interested in photographs of the vessel contact me via my email.

Thanks for that Alan I have located a copy of the august issue of the mag but a few photo’s of your larger scale version would be appreciated. I found the stern best done in narrow vertical wedge shaped strips. I have the hull almost complete in mount card waiting for a coat of resin and glass tissue to waterproof and strengthen it. how are you dealing with the rail junction between the cabins as i feel this area will be weak if its all attached to the rear cabin roof/sun deck.

Thanks for the imput Larry and congrats on your version. I’ve finally seen the article. sorry for taking  so long to reply my spare time has been taken up with a redesign of our kitchen (hence the unpainted wall in the following pic) I’ve managed to sneak a few hours in the shed so she is now ready for a coat of resin to strengthen the hull up a bit and water proof the card. 1st though I need to make a propshaft tube for her

Back again ! I’ve found some time between decorating work and the club annual show on sat to do a bit more and now the hull is nearly ready for its 1st coat of primer.

using copper wire for the hand rails was a stroke of genius very effective. the grey is fine surface filler and the pink colour is grp resin which on top of the card has made a very strong hull

Thanks for that kind comment Bob. I have to admit to messing the grp coating up a little. The 1st coat went on very smooth and did its job well, but I failed to clean the wax properly before applying the 2nd coat and so it puddled/beaded hence the proliferation of fine surface filler  still I’ve just about got it right now and hopefully will be priming it soon.

I like to use scabby old wood, myself, then hide the fact with P38 and paint….very rewarding?

Hi mark the copper wire is ex domestic flat twin and earth wire available in short lengths and various diameters from most diy stores to get it perfectly straight 1st strip the outer coverings off then grip one end in a secure vice and grip the other end with sturdy pliers or mole grips and attempt to stretch it. you will feel the wire give i little and presto when you release the tension it is straight and true and a little harder to just as a bonus.
