I do believe I've finally used all the bits of wood from the kit. Hurrah!! Added the rubbing strip over the last day or two but had to improvise with a home-spun bow piece as the detail isn't mentioned in the kit. I should also say that I'd forgotten how fab P.38 filler is. Wonderful stuff. Sanding sealer's in the post and I'll be staining the deck before the weekend. Question is, what colour? Mahogany or a light-ish oak? At the moment I favour the oak simply because the darker mahogany tends to hide the laser etched plank lines. Any thoughts chaps?

              Hi Graham,

The windscreen looks the part, I'm sure you would have some canopy glue

              Regards Ray

Looks very nice "in the wood".

Personally not keen on staining wood unless I know that there is absolutely no glue on it whatsoever.

I use ordinary epoxy resin glue on transparencies, but a personal preference…

Please adjust the prop locknut before sailing.

                  Thanks chaps.

Canopy glue is definitely my preferred option Ray, although I'm still considering some sort of deck-level channel section to hold the screen. I'm not keen on a simple glued butt joint because I'm not sure I can make it neat enough.

No glue on the deck as far as I'm aware Ashley but I'm going to double check now you've said that.

BTW, the chosen colour scheme is No.2 – the most popular and, as luck would have it, my favourite.

Hi Graham, lovely build, i would favor the oak finish, have you considered the screen surround? some fine chrome effect trim strip on eBay, looks very nice and for you it would mount the screen to the deck as well

                      Hi Graham,

That looks really lovely now, nice job. I have used OO/HO railway track (Peco Flexi) to make screen surrounds. (Just the metal rails) File one side so the top and bottom of the rail are parallel, drill some small holes for pins and along with a little epoxy fit the track to the deck. (Track pins or cut down dressmakers pins work well)

The screen fits in the groove on the other side and can be a 'click' in fit if you make a soldered frame all the way round. It's easier than it sounds but look lovely, almost like the real thing.

                      Cheers…….Ron.

Further to my last post, to get the curve, anneal the frame till its red and quench in water, this will make it easy to bend a couple of times.

Sorry, meant to put that in last time.

                        Ron.

                                    Hi Dave,

Hasn't it just! Sorry about that. Yes there has been some progress although I'll be honest I haven't had a moment to myself since taking over RCM&E (in the middle of the show season). Editing a magazine is busy enough but handing one over and picking up another straight after is, well, just silly. Normality will return and with it progress on the Sea Breeze. I promise! Thanks for your interest, by the way.

Message understood. I'm hoping that my 'normal service' will resume by the end of next month. Moving house and starting a new workshop from nothing is not something I would recommend!
Look forward to seeing this little boat finished and on the water. I'll try to look out that sheet of Union flags, too.

What Union flags are you looking for?, I have a large sheet of Union Jacks, peel off stick on waterproof, with Dave's modelling equipment in storage he may struggle to find them, tell me what size you want and I'll post them to you..

                                          Regards………..Ron R.

PS I'm looking at them right now. From 10 x 5 mm up to 50 x 25mm They are the BECC ones.

Graham Ashby was describing the build while he was briefly editor of Model Boats, I doubt if he finished the model, he went back to his first love, model flying as editor of RCM&E magazine, a position he has recently left to work for a distributor. When I see him next I will ask him to make contact.

Work life has finally settled a little and I'm finding time to tinker with stuff again. Result? I've dusted off the Sea Breeze – VMBC's longest ever build! Anyway, latest news is that the hull has received two coats of sanding sealer (lightly rubbed between each) the deck has had a coat of Antique Pine wood stain (another to follow) and she's masked ready for the first coat of filler-primer. It's good to be back. Goodness, I may even get it finished at this rate!
