        Hi All,

Been slapping on the filler today in readiness for paint preparation. Which brings me to colour schemes. If you haven't already seen this on the MB Facebook page, which scheme do you prefer? So far the voting on Facebook is:

        Scheme 1 = 1 vote

        Scheme 2 = 22 votes

        Scheme 3 = 3 votes

        Scheme 4 = 12 votes

I'd love to know what you think.

        Regards

Scheme 4 gets my vote, the red and white contrast is a see and be seen classic.

Incidentally, I would love to see a tutorial on how you did those options. I have never been any good at doing that on a computer. I have to resort to a piece of paper and some crayons!!!!!!

I guess it depends on which vector drawing program you use. Mine is an ancient version of CorelDraw 12. The line drawing is imported from my main CAD package as a JPG then I trace round the various coloured "blocks" and add the colours, saving the resulting file as a JPG. Here's one I did earlier…

As regards Graham's four suggestions, two seem strangely familiar and one of the others is a simple variation, so I really don't feel I should pitch in with a vote for any of them. I will be interested to see which one "wins", though!

Thank you Chas. The drawings were a piece of cake. I took a photograph of the side profile, sent it to MB's fab illustrator (Grahame) and he did the rest. I've always found this the best way to draw anything wink

                  Dave,

I've been rumbled! Something else I stole, although I have to say I think it suits the boat really well. That's a terrific drawing of the Huntress by the way.

I have to agree with you there, Graham. As for nicking it, I prefer to use the words "faithfully reproduced" – a bit like calling a back-hander "commission"!

                        Graham,

My favourite is definitely scheme 1, but if you have been "slapping on the filler", I suppose that stained and varnished sides might no longer be a viable option?!

My runner-up favourite would be scheme 3, as I think that darker-coloured topsides will set off the stained and varnished deck even better than white ones.

                          Hi Mattias,

That's interesting, I was beginning to wonder if Scheme 1 was invisible to everyone but me! As for the filler – slapping it on but rubbing it right back. Also, the cunning bit about Scheme 1 is that all the filled bits are overpainted in white – which is why the waterline rises at the front. It has to be said that I don't usually employ this amount of forethought.

Option 4 gets my vote, with the thin blue line on the topsides, My Sea Hornet didn't make the stained deck look that good in my opinion, may re-paint light blue ??

Do you mean Scheme 4 but swap the red line for blue? Loving that Sea Hornet. I'm going to dig out photos of my old one and post 'em up.

I like them all except No 1. The concept of the varnished hull is good but I don't think it would look right on plywood, wrong grain pattern. OK if the hull was planked of course.

Marginally I think I favour No 4 so that gets my vote!

Yes the thin blue line will look sharp, my Sea Hornet is dark red/maroon not really clear in the photo

Well, I found the old photo of my Sea Hornet Ray. My first ply boat build circa 1982. I would have been in my late teens. Sorry about the colour scheme and the god-awful photo quality. Mind you it was the '80s!

Colin's right about the ply finish. There are so many beautifully-finished Aquaramas and Chris Crafts out there with umpteen coats of clear varnish that you'd be duty-bound to veneer the hull and then varnish it until you couldn't bear the thought of yet another coat. Then the deck would look kind of sad….and at the end of the day some clever beggar would tell you "I like your Riva".

Contrast that with a spray coat of hi-build, two of primer and three of Halford's gloss – Appliance White and Ford Oxford Blue or whichever non-metallic red takes your fancy. Easy peasy.

BTW I have a full sheet of different-size self-adhesive Union flags – less the two I used on Maid. Let me know the size you want and I'll cut 'em out and send 'em orft.

Oooh, thank you very much for the flag offer. Count me in! I'll let you know the rough size shortly. yes
