Thanks Dave and Graham, I am still quite happy with sails, but I am storing all these bits of info just in case my grandson gets the bug and wants something more exciting!

      Eddie.

      I'm doing sails next Eddie… I think.

Very neat installation Graham, it will go like a rocket. Nice one.

        Ron.

Thanks Ron. If it's too fast I'll just have to throttle back, though I think it'll be fine.

Sails not quite so nerve jangling!

I'm not so sure about that Eddie. I've had some pretty tense moments yacht racing.

WOO HOO! The deck's on at last. Spent part of the day making hatches and thinking very seriously about the cockpit installation, covering the motor up, and colour schemes. As for the seat, I think some cushions might be in order – looks a bit of a hard ride! More soon…

Although not strictly scale in appearance, I do like the grain pattern on the sides…. Would it look nice with a light stain and high-gloss varnish, I wonder….

Armando, I have to say I was quite attracted to the grain pattern too. At the moment I'm working up a few colour schemes to see which I like best, one of which is a varnished mahogany hull with a white underside. I'm terrible at decisions and you've just made it harder, but I forgive you smiley

I'm playing around with the cockpit at the moment, namely a rolled ply motor cover and some floor grating. You can't beat a bit of timber grating in my book.

Hi All, a little more here. For the cockpit I decided to add a floor grating because I've never built a boat with a grating before and I love the stuff. That and louvres on engine covers are two of my favourite things. Anyway, a 3mm grating kit from Model Dockyard proved perfect. Very happy with the simple rolled ply engine cover too, that was more luck (with a card template) than judgement. I've also just been working up some colour schemes with Grahame (MB's artist / illustrator) and there's four to choose from so I'll post them shortly to see which you like best. Should be interesting.

You're too kind Colin. It's fair to say I've built a few aeroplanes in the past but boats is where it all started. My trouble is I'm not very tolerant of my own building mistakes so I've had to learn to get it as right as I can, even if it takes a little (okay, a lot) longer.

Don't tell anyone but the transom is slightly askew (in plan view) because, stupidly, I didn't use a building jig and relied on my not-so-accurate eyeball when assembling the frames. Fortunately I've been able to hide it by putting a slight rake on the rear hatch and creating an optical illusion which, cunningly (and remarkably effectively), almost completely disguises it. No-one will know if we keep it to ourselves!

I hope you can afford some cushions that bench seat looks B uncomfortable to me, love the gratings

Graham. PROBABLY no one`s boat is completely true, or bits thereon are a bit wonky. All my craft have wobbly bits, but unless you put them on a flat surface and used measuring gear, no one would notice.

It is quite acceptable to use a cunning ruse to disguise the offending error.

Never photograph a boat/thingy square on, always take snaps at an angle (my top tip)…

Hi Ashley, I'm sure you're right, although this was avoidable to be honest. I thought my eye was better than that. Mind you, it wasn't helped by the twisted keel.

Glad you approve of the ruse – it really did work rather well. So well that I even got a degree of satisfaction from successfully covering the mistake.

                                      Your photography tip is good!

I rather suspect no one has bothered that much to look rather than its that obvious! I have simplified several items for ease of construction for instance the rearmost side 6" casement should be angled in rather than flush as the others are, but I did that on purpose, similarly there are no railings. The men are a bit big but add plenty of interest, however the other thing, well..
