Graham, what thickness is the warped bit of wood? Are you going to fit the running gear before going much further as advocated by all and sundry while you still have good access and so on??

Difficult to get ply that's dead straight. I usually sort through the bits and get as good as I can. It doesn't matter much with very thin ply in any case really, but there can be a big difference in sheets of 4mm, and these I find need to be carefully selected.

Different proposition with PROPER man-made board of course, its always nice and flat. wink

Hi Ashley, it's 1.5mm, although (as you say) it being warped one way or the other doesn't really matter, I was just chuffed that it had warped perfectly to suit the hull shape. Mind you, it will make it easier to pull in at the front.

          smiley

Crikey, yes, 4mm wouldn't be so easy to flatten!

As for the running gear, I'm a bit undecided (there's a lot of access even with the deck on) but I'll probably fit it before the deck and finish varnishing the inside too.

Hi. Graham, I thought you might like to know that you are now slowly winding me in with your articles in Model Boats.

It started last summer when I picked up the copy with the Varmint DF yacht in, it was an ideal project as I was recovering from a hip replacement op. My current build, Ardent, is the fourth boat to be built since then.

Having taken the bait at that time you are now hauling me in with the article on sail making by John Goodyear, following that with a sail control article, and then later on another boat by John. Please keep up the good work!

            Regards.

Hi Eddie, well, it sounds as if you were being wound in long before I pitched up, although I'm delighted the team is managing to fuel that enthusiasm for sail. I have to be honest, I think my next build will be a traditional wooden yacht, although semi-scale. For racing I've taken the easy option with the DF-Class however John is genuinely delighted with the Alpha so it should be good. Stay tuned. Oh, and don't buy the April issue for the Sail Control piece because, try as I might, I couldn't fit it in. Sorry. It'll arrive in May.

              Kind regards

              Graham

Hi Graham, you're right I was boat building 40 yeas ago now, but got hooked on engineering after building a steam plant that was meant to go into a model of Cervia, the tug that is now laid up in Ramsgate harbour and was still in service at that time.

My first two builds this time around have been Varmint, Racing Sparrow (from New Zealand) and the current build Ardent, I too like the scale or semi scale boats and I have the drawings for Duet from a few years ago, but I also like the size of, and fairly quick build of the smaller racing yachts so I am looking forward to Alpha

                Regards.

                Eddie.

                    Hi Eddie,

I think you're right, if you're a reasonably quick builder – which, as you can see, I'm not – I think John's Alpha will go together in no time. I have to say, the prospect of making everything (including the sails) is very attractive.

Ardent looks great. Pity there's no kit available, I'd be interested.

                    Kind regards

Hi All, a few snaps of today's side skin sanding job. Another massively satisfying process that's left me with the makings of a hull. Much happier with the joint on this one than the other side so I can only surmise that the practice is paying off. Motor and rudder this week, then it's on with the deck. More next week when we've booted the April issue out the door.

                            Hi Graham

It's a good job your a pilot ! because with that motor in your little boat not much of it is going to be in the water

Seriously are there chine/spray rails as designed ? she will be horrible and very wet without them.

                            Regards Ray

Dave, coming from you, that's made my day. I have to say I was quite pleased with it. smiley

Ray, it's a fair point, mind you at 600mm it's the same size as Dave's Huntress (I believe) so I've gone for the same motor and controller / 3S combo. No chine spray rails as designed but it wouldn't be any trouble to fit some so I think I will. Good thought… I guess I can always rate the throttle back at the Tx too.

                              Regards Graham

                                        Hi All

I did order a 900kv, but, that's what arrived, so it was tamer than the 3000kv in the Hobbyking outboard in my 24" balsa boat.

It is an interesting boat to drive, but, keep under half throttle on the turns!!!

Hi all, just to prove that I haven't been completely idle, here's a little more. I still can't quite believe that the motor and shaft were in perfect alignment without having to use shims but, honestly, they were bag on.

The battery tray suits all my existing 3S packs and she's had another two coats of varnish inside. I think it's time I fitted the deck.

Hi. Graham, that's a neat installation, is that water cooling on what I assume is the speed controller? everything in boxes seems a much neater solution than double sided tape or velcro, provided you have the capacity.

Yes, those are inlet and outlet connections for water-cooling the 30A ESC but in my own experience with this same set-up it's not necessary to use it. Even after fifteen minutes thrashing round the pond at full steam nothing gets more than just warm.

I copied his Huntress installation and I'm copying his thinking on the water-cooling wink

I'm not keen on Velcro or double-sided tape although I will probably mount the receiver on the stuff, unless I can think of a neater way. The box idea doesn't really work because the Hitec Optima 7 has sockets on either end.

                                                      Hi All,

That Turnigy 30A. Speed controller is amazing and exactly the same as the Alex Engel ones from Germany I used to use. (Cheaper now from HK) I've been using them for over 2 years now and have never needed to connect up the water cooling as Dave has said.

Very neat installation Graham, it will go like a rocket. Nice one.
