Hi, I'm building my first display model boat and looking for some help The model is a Corel Kit at 1:100 of the 20 gun Frigate HMS Greyhound. Suffice it to say the build is going well but I am very disappointed with the quality of the cast metal parts supplied with the Kit. I've overcome most of the problems except the ships boat, This is supplied as a white metal casting, just the shell, with no guidance as to what to do with it and I don't think a painted die cast boat on the deck of a 1760 Frigate is going to look the part. I am therefore looking for some plans to build a plank on frame ships boat, rowing boat, jolly boat, (call it what you will). The finished boat needs to be around 90mm long and 25mm beam. Can anybody suggest a source or advice as to developing my own plans ? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply. I've looked at these but I'm worried they are castings or worse, plastic mouldings, which will inevitably have the same image problem as the Corel die casting, but thanks for trying to help. Brian

As Dave suggests, the Quaycraft boats are good quality and used by many scale modellers. If you can find the size you want they should be fine for a Corel kit. I used them on my Fishery Cruiser and added detail.

If you are determined to make one yourself, there's an old tried and tested method not much used these days. You would use the casting as a plug, waxed first then overlay thin strips of gummed paper strip. After a thick enough moulding is made, finish it with shellac / varnish to stiffen it and remove from the plug.

I've done this years ago, it's fiddly and laborious, and takes a lot of effort with the last internal and external strips to simulate planks, but it is realistic and surprisingly strong.

I no longer have the model to which I fitted the Quaycraft dinghy casting but I'm 99% sure that the interior planking was incorporated into it. The seats etc were also supplied and the whole thing looked very professional and appropriate on my 1/72 scale Clyde Puffer. I do have a photo but it's not clear enough to show the dinghy in any detail.

O – and Admiral Sir Coiln Bishop wouldn't fit any old rubbish on one of his models, either! Both he and I are very fussy about 'third-party fittings'.

You will be successful. The main thing is not to rush with the choice of material.
