Well done for making your own bits Stephen. I know when I’ve made bits in the past on other models, they may not look particularly accurate, but they serve the purpose.

I made my funnel by rolling thin ply, after a good soaking in water, around various diameter bits, until I got down to the size I wanted, then glued the edges and glued re-inforcing strips inside. Like you, I will use small split pins to locate funnel pipework. I just need to find where you can obtain them from. I’ve painted a few bits , but I might change the colours a bit before things are finished.

Looking forwars to seeing how you progress,

      Jim.

I have a bag with various bits and pieces of chain in it, collected over the years.  This is not only useful for when I might need a piece of chain but it is also very handy for eyelets for rigging.  I have some chain that is simply a circular brass link so all I do when I want to put together a rigging anchor/bottlescrew/fixing etc. is to remove a link and fit it to whatever is appropriate.  I also have a good selection of eyes from various model suppliers that I simply fit into a drilled hole with a spot of glue as an anchoring point.

Mountfleet do some very nice cast white metal padeyes but they are a bit soft if you want to put any sort of load on them.  I replaced the eye with a brass machined eye, to give more strength, the result you can see on the deck fitting.  The anchors on the gunwhale are just more of the same brass screwed eyes.  Funnel fittings again are from Mountfleet although I scratch built the whistle from scraps of brass.

Thankyou for posting those pictures Richard. It’s always trying to get the small detail as near correct as possible that causes the most frustration I find.

Your BEN AIN always amazes me when you look at the amount of detail you’ve managed to get on board.

You have the advantage of having actually worked on ships and have seen that sort of detail close up whereas bog standard modellers like myself either search the web for bits or study pictures like yours.

          Many thanks……….Jim.

            Hi Jim

I got my split pins on ebay from a seller called Spalding Fasteners as I wanted brass, not steel, very thin, 2mm and 50mm long.

              Hi Stephan ,

Thanks for that. I’ve been looking around as well and it would appear there are a number of sites that provide them. Need to do some measuring.

              Jim.

I have some resin figures as crew for the boat who need putting together. Is there a prefered adhesive for glueing resin models togeter? It’s not something I’ve done before.

                Thanks

                Jim.

For mine I used a brass pin in each joint with Wests 5min epoxy, worked a treat.

                    Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling they would need some sort of connection like that for strength at the joint.

                      Hi,

I’ve spent a recent period of time upgrading the electrics on my Tid Tug and have more or less fininished.

The ESC is an MTroniks  Marine Viper 25 amp. A thing that puzzles me is , why does such a small, sealed unit emit so much noise when operating? There’s obviously a reason, but my electronics knowledge doesn’t stretch that far and I wondered if someone could explain. Thanks.

                      Jim.

It does seem that certain combinations of motors and speed controllers can give rise to an annoying whine. I don’t think there is much than can be done about it short of changing one or the other.

The controllers pulse the motor which give rise to the noise I think.

                          Hello Jim,

I have the same issue with some of my boats !! no rhyme or reason to it 🙁

                          All the best Ray

                            Hi Lads

I use the Quicrun 60Amp ESC with all my brushed motors with no problems at all.

                            Just remove one link (forward/brake/reverse).

The other one is for NMHI/ Lipo battery.

Finish setup, quicker change between forward and reverse then the Viper ones.

                            Harry

Hi gents, thanks for the information and suggestions. Once the superstructure is over everything it would probably reduce the sound , but I just wondered if there was a specific reason for it.

Now the tug conversion has been done, I can get back to the Puffer. I cant send any pictures at the moment as I’ve changed my phone and haven’t figured a few things out yet, including sending e-mails, which is annoying.

                              Thanks for the help……..Jim.
