        Hello there Ken

It`s nice to know there`s someone out there lookin` in!

Working on the paddle wheels at the moment and they are progressing well…….Just posted the first paddle wheel……it`s looking a bit too chunky……might have to slenderise it

Just been having a look at my battery powered electric drill….could make a suitable motor…….eh? …..and they`re dirt cheap!

          Hi Bob,

Been keeping a close eye on the progress and was impressed with the wheel – looked really good.

The drills are good, you can pick them up for £14 or less now days, an unusual place to look are the supermarkets, Tesco-Asda always competing with each other !.

They come with nice powerful motors (small) gearbox if required, and you can select the ratio,  its own battery & charger – when you think about it, they are a good source of power supplies.  You may even get a few drill bits thrown in for good measure.

I got my "Mouse" sander from Tesco for under £10.oo (ok it was on offer) its a matter of keeping your eyes open and spotting the offers as they appear.

          Keep going …. Ken

            Hi Bob,

            just discovered your thread…..

have you considered purchasing the 1:200 scale card model of the Great Eastern? £43.95 from Marcle Models……

if you have the facilities, you can scan / scale up the sheets to 1:100 – this will then provide you with a multitude of parts to either assemble directly or use to create templates…..

my dad is currently doing this with the GPM card kit of USS Lexington to produce an rc version at 1:144 – he is using the card pieces as templates to cut out in wood and plastic..

thats my fourpennyworth…………….for what its worth!!!

            regards

            carl

That`s a good idea Carl……………Why didn`t you mention that earlier?……..only joking, but it would have been very helpful at the design stage

It`s a bit  late now unfortuneatly………I`m too far into my idea of what the ship looked like!

Is the Marcle model over 40" long then?…….in card?………The full size ship was 690 feet…….at 100th scale, that makes it 6.9 feet

the blurb says that it is 1070mm long…………whatever that is in real money!!!!!

it also says that it is suitable for rc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry i didnt mention it earlier – only just noticed your thred……..dont get as much time to read the forums as i would like to these days it seams…

                  Carl…………………1070mm is 42 inches!……..that is correct!

That would have been the ideal starting point!…………..but I did ask round before starting the build!

                  Thanks anyway!

                      cheers,

                        Hello Hutch

However did you find this long lost thread?

I thought it was erased a few years ago!

At 1070m long, it will make a nice mantelpiece model

                          Another GE Thread for James

It appears that the mammoth build story has been erased recently……Which is a pity

The photo gallery is still available though

The build story was also described in an early issue of ModelBoats Magazine….Dec 2008

I suppose it's a bit late in the day but I have a list of photo sources on a website called Model Ship World, under scratch building and plans. Be warned: the Russell deck plan is not how the ship was built. There is an excellent description of the ship in the June 1860 issue of the New York Times, available for free on their 'Archive' site. Don't try to look it up by subject or you'll get everything including the kitchen sink: look under the date, and you have to go in a ways to find it. It's a couple dozen pages long but I copied the whole thing. It also gives a refreshingly positive view of the Great Eastern for a change.

Thread retrieved from the archives for reference

It's strange that the pictures are missing?

This happened when the Magazine new ownership took place, the photos are still available if required

                                    They are my prized possessions

                                          Do you still have her?

Great shame you got rid of her but things get in the way sometimes. Do you still see it or did it go a long way away? I hope it has been well looked after!

The models took up far too much space, as we live in a small bungalow
