Although these figures vary from various websites……Great Eastern had a gross tonnage of 19000 tons and a displacement of 27000 tons!

Can anyone out there, explain the comparative meaning of these figures?

      Bob

Hi Bob, and happy new year.

Gross tonnage, in really simple terms, is the volume of a ship (all spaces included – aye even the funnels) expressed in tons and displacement is the total weight of the ship fully loaded, fuelled and manned ready for sea.

Now I wish it were that simple, because depending when those figures you quoted were produced there could be different interpretations as to their meaning as definitions have changed and were not standardised till the late 60s.

I think some one else might want to participate with meanings – a retired ships officer would be ideal, after all, they had to use these values when loading and ballasting their charges.

I don’t have a telly (been without for about 30 years, but still get a monthly letter from the licence people telling me I don’t have a licence) so have you been on TV yet, or is that still to come. And yes, can I request a DVD of the event (I’ll pay expenses too.)

        Thanks, Kimosubby

Don`t really understand the large difference in tonnage figures?

Have not yet recieved a reply from the BBC regarding the broadcast date, as they are all off till Jan 4th, but will keep you all informed

Can`t promise a DVD but I`ll see what can be done…….I wonder if Modelboats could do something along those lines, but I suppose copyright laws may prevent this

I recco you should get a telly now…….The Coast progs are on nearly every week these days
The prog channel 38, ………”Quest”……is just up our street!

All the best for the New Year, Kimmo

No definite date for the broadcast, better than…..”Sometime in the summer!

But added……….”Great Eastern looks just fantastic in the film!”

We wait in anticipation and food for thought, regarding the magazine release date?

              Bob,

It seems that Tonnage is a measure of cargo carrying capacity and displacement is the maximum weight of the loaded vessel. So in simplistic terms, GE would have an unloaded weight of 8,000 tons and was able to carry a load of 19,000 tons, making her 27,000 tons fully laden.

According to the wonderful Wikipedia, Gross Tonnage is now a standardised calculation based on the volume of the vessel, as Kimo describes. GT is not quite the maximum weight of cargo in tons though, but is an approximation based of the volume of the vessel.
Does this help or make sense?

              Happy New Year!

I get the guist of it now, even though the figures don`t really stack up
The figures mentioned, are probably incorrect anyway!

I`ve seen all sorts of widely inaccurate figures mentioned on various web sites

                Happy New Year!

Just to make an interesting comparison – the Old Queen Mary had a gross tonnage of around 81,000 and displaced about 80,000 tons. The new Queen Mary 2 has a gross tonnage of around 151,000 ons but displaces just 76,000 tons – less than her predecessor despite her greater aboove water dimensions.

Lol! Just as well GT seems to be used for safety regulations and berthing fees, rather than for loading!

                      Next narking question…….

How can volume displacement be expressed in tons?

ie…..What is the weight of a cubic yard?

                      Bob

I’m sure I can recall being told at primary school that ‘a pint of water weighs a pound and a quarter’ so it’s easily calculated. Of course, that applies to freshwater so you would have to factor in an adjustment for saltwater being denser than fresh.

There Bob, that should keep you busy for today!

It’s so obvious!…….now that you’ve put me on the right track!

19000 gross tonnage x CB factor of 4.5 + 2% BS factor. Not forgetting a slice of MB / .2.00003 and multiplied by the number of MB pages plus a dollop of PF and then add today’s date x Brunell’s inside leg measurement and the answer is…….27000 tons

                          Dead on!

                              Hi Chaps

Etherow Model Boat Club will be having a stand at this years Ellesmere Port`s model boat show in early March and GE will be on display on one of the days.
We have the main club stand at EventCity in Trafford Park on the same weekend, which is a little unfortuneate!

In the meantime, a few things needed tidying up.
The most obvious missing item was the steam powered servo operated ships wheel.
The rudder is operated by steam power and controlled by the Captain (Standing outside in the rain!) midships.

I don`t really know how the mechanism operated, but assume the ships wheel operated a servo valve which in turn sent the signal, about 300 feet aft, to the steam powered rudder mechanism!
As a last resort, the rudder was also fitted with six wheelhelms in tandem, operated by twelve good men!

I had great fun making the wheel……..See later pictures

Just letting you chaps know, that the Great Eastern will be on show at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum Spring Show on Saturday 3rd of March 2012

Duckie and I will man the Etherow Club stand and we look forward to meeting a few of our forum members for a friendly chat and answer any questions you may have?

Still no news regarding the BBC Coast broadcast date

At the moment, the story of the modifications to the model for cable laying and filming at Hoylake August 2011 will appear in the May 2012 issue of the ModelBoats Magazine

Great Eastern at the Ellesmere March Show 2012

We had a lovely day with great assistance from the event organisers. John Hughes and Alan Watts. Many thanks chaps!

We had a nice central position in the exhibition hall and also….a private car parking spot!

The day was very entertaining and nice to meet up with old and new friends.

The weather was gorgeous, but today, we`ve got rain and sleet!

My pal Duckie giving out the spiel!

It was most unfortuneate that the main club stand was on show at Event City in Trafford Park!

Sounds like you had a grand time at Ellesmere wished I could have been there but that nasty four letter word WORK prevented me.

I've just remembered a little snippet from yesterday's trip!

A chap was looking at the GE model and pointed to one of the deck cabins. He recalled seeing a Summer House in the garden of girls boarding school in the Rockferry area which was abandoned and it turned out to be a cabin from the Great Eastern!

Luckily, it was saved and now resides in the Maritime Museum in Liverpool

I read on the net that a few of GE's cabins were sold off at the time of scrapping at Rockferry.

I will try and track this relic down and post a picture……..That would be nice?

                                            Hi Bob,

yep, sounds like you had a good show at Ellesmere, it's a pity my enquiries about the show put up on this site under shows and events to which you replied, got no further than sent emails from me! I wuld have really liked to have been showing too. Maybe next year, I'll pin Dave Wooley's ears on the Dortmund trip in April.

Would have been nice to have met up too.

By the bye, didn't know anything about the Northern ME show at Trafford Park till you mentioned it. Still, looking at the Club display listing not many model boaters did either.

                                            Be in touch kimosubby.

To be correct to our groups rules we took a vote, Need I say that the Vote was Unanimous.

The GE model looked superb and set of the traders area with some clubs very nicely..
