As a newcomer to the site I would like some advice about electrics and sail control for the Colin Archer.

when I say I’m a relative newcomer many will say this is not the ideal model, however I have built Dave Metcalfs Moonbeam and Alan Hornes J Class Nottingham so I can actually follow plans/ instructions both were excellent in these cases – but I’m finding Billings somewhat lacking.

i did see an earlier post regarding sail winch etc and one member seemed very helpful and I wondered if I could beg some tips.

      fingers crossed…

      Rod.

          Hello Rod and welcome

How long is your Colin Archer?

I know you mention winch but is that a drum type or lever arm type you were looking at?

            Hi Rod,

I owned a Colin Archer for a while, I would say around 36" long it had a drum winch and running line below deck for the main sail only , as they have an auxiliary motor it's quite handy for tacking in a breeze as the scale rudder is to small, may need a removable extension, the management said it hand to go when I started Thames Sailng barges 😀

            Regards Ray

              Hi Tim and Ray,

thanks for your replies, yes it’s the large one actually 414 and I wish to use a drum winch and considering using the J class arrangements but as yet I’ve no idea the layout and where the sheets would come through the deck. As for the drawings good as they are it would have been useful to say for static or for rc.

Rigging wise and deck fittings should they all be fitted or which would snag the sheets?

im getting way ahead of myself at mo, but it’s good to suss all options even if “ me heads a shed”
