G’day thought I’d post some pic’s of my scratch build of the USS Long Beach the last real cruiser built by the US Navy (the rest being enlarged Destroyer Hulls).
She is 3.05m long, beam of 31.9cm and draft of approx 13cm started construction  approximately 7 months ago currently building Superstructure out of styrene sheet.

Very nice too. Long Beach was a one off but an evolutionary dead end in warship development. She had a unique appearance though.

Many thanks for posting and keep us up to date with the build.

Hi One of my favorite CGNs .   I ran a feature on the Long Beach in Model Boats about 7 -8 years ago  in issue 608 -610 plenty of detailed pictures I remember. Minus the old Bill Boards . Great job you are doing there .

                 Cheers Guys,
Dave I have read those 3 Issues many times. I drew up LB’s plans myself way back then from the Pic’s and published data. Then before I could start the build had 2 move house which caused the disappearance until last year of half the plans!! Upon finding them I promptly began construction!! (before anything else could happen). I joined the Local Branch of TF72 recently and we had a sail day here in Adelaide at West Lakes.
                G’day from Oz, Bruce

From foreground HMS Hood, USS Long Beach, USS Scott (Kidd Class) jokingly called the under construction row!!

Rear view, far end behind USS Scott R HMAS Darwin, a Revell flower class, HMAS Parramatta (ANZAC class), on white box HMAS Tobruk (Battle class)

Hi Bruce I’m really pleased that you could make use of the photos. I would have liked to have built the Long Beachlace and remember seeing Loren Perry’s  superb  model at the Model Engineering Exhibition in 1985 { I think that’s the year} Please post up more as your build progresses , if you would.   The under construction row is probably the most  interesting to those building models as it  conveys much more as to how things are  done. The only event in the UKlace that does this as an event feature is The National warship weekend at Queens Park Glasgow and this “shipyard row” always attracts lots of interest  from  modelers and the public with  line after line of models  stretching  into the distance . Thanks for posting the pictures always good to see   the  boating  activities  from down under  and those of TF72. Which “fleetbase” are you in?

                  Dave Wooley .

G’day Dave !! This is the 3rd time I’ve tried 2 reply (it keeps telling me 2 login!! which I had done!!)
I’m with Fleetbase “Gulf Waters” here in Adelaide, South Oz. We have 7 members with a couple more in the pipeline. between 7 of us we have 17 models in various states of construction!! ( actually one of the crew has 6 models and the rest of us have the other 11!)

Hi Bruce   I will be touching base with Michael Brown next week , I’ve much to catch up on. When I was considering Long Beach the problem  I  foresaw , real or  myth was the windage on the box superstucture especially at 1:96 . Any thoughts on that ?

G’day Dave, I don’t think there will be a significant windage problem at all. My Lb has 8 x12v7Ah Batteries as power(6 for 12v21Ah and 2 for Aux systems) and ballast (28kg!)+ approx 22kg of lead ballast !! On Her 1st outing with TF72 the early morning run was in 4″ chop with windy conditions (no super structure and she was unfazed (even the wake from a passing powered Dingy  did’nt bother her!!) 1st run with all superstructure in place will be in two or 3 weeks we shall C then!!
                        Cheers Bruce

Hi Bruce   I shall be looking forward to the on the water pictures with all the superstucture in place .  TF72 certainly   go for the BIG warships, some great shots there.  USN warships don’t seem quite as popular  on the UK warship scene , pity  as there are many unusual warships ,USS Albany as converted to a missile armed cruiser  being one of them !!!!

Oddly Enuff a contact of mine in the UK has sent me all his Info on USS Albany and I have already begun drawing up plans in 1/72 !! (He also has a Long Beach but in 1/96scale).
I may start hull for Albany during our winter she will be a revised version of my 2-piece hull design used in Lb making her as easy 2 transport as Lb. I like building models that R not built often by modelers, makes it more interesting out on the pond!!
I also have an idea 2 build a model of RFA Diligence the RN’s fleet repair ship but that might be a while off!!

                                Cheers Bruce

                                  G’day all!

Been working on Bridge lights so I can glue bridge sections together shortly. Here R some pic’s of this evenings lights test. They R LED strips that come with the resistor built in for 12v with double sided tape on back to stick where ever you need em.
The white LED’s R very bright on 12v I will try em on lower volts tomorrow. the RED LED’s r fine on 6v give exactly the effect I want

                                  Cheers Bruce

Here R some pic’s from Sundays sail day.  USS Long Beach handles strong winds brilliantly hardly affected at all (just moved Superstructure slightly need 2 secure it better, will get some rare earth magnets to do the job.) the Autumn leaves caused more trouble than the wind i had 2 unclog props twice! (all it did was slow her down!) Lb was joined on the water by USS Scott (Kidd class DDG) ,HMAS Vampire, HMAS Parramatta, USS Saucy (Flower class) a brilliant 1st effort by Ritchie! guest’s Gunter and Gunther brought along 1/50 scale models of Zwartt Zee and MV Troubridge , a model of a local RO-RO ferry that I actually traveled on many times as a kid.

Hi Bruce   Looks very effective on the water  . I  have a fond liking for more off beat subjects like the Albany  in fact the USN   undertook  a number of  such   conversions of older cruisers in the post war years a good example was the USS Boston and Canberra  not quite as radical as the Albany’s  but had the   Terrier   missile convertion aft , whilst retaining   the forward 8inch guns.  Although  plans and photos are  available you really don’t see these models being built  even in the US.   Good to see your Long Beach on the water .

Thx Dave, Lb run’s beautifully, but still need’s approx. 4 to 5kg of ballast towards stern.
She has a very nice prototypical lean when turning and even in the gusty conditions was able 2 do full power turns without trouble!
USS Albany is going 2 be a long term build (a slow build as finance’s permit and I want her 2 be really easy 2 launch with water ballast rather than lugging 40kg’s of lead).
I have drawn up plans for a CGN-36 USS California 2 join USS Long Beach as she will be a bit more transportable, I hope 2 have her ready by Dec for the TF72 Regatta ( as my secret project!) If all goes  according 2 plan (which is rare) LB should be mostly done apart from minor stuff (like nearly 6.3m of brass railing around main deck!!) And California should be running with superstructure!!

                                            Cheers from OZ, Bruce

Just been on a 1920km(approx) road trip 2 the Tf72 Carriers & Escort’s weekend over in Wagga! A great 2 days of sailing and catching up with some of the legendary model makers of the Club!  USS Long Beach ran without fault for both days and only the TX batt’s going below 8.8v on Sunday stopped her (the Tx’s insistent beeping was the clue!)

                                                    G’day Dave,

Mick is an excellent photographer and took about 400!! photos over the 2 days! I will be getting some plans off him for a Russian Slava class cruiser for a future build. His late father drew up plans for many Russkie Ships in exceptional detail, enough detail 2 build a very accurate model.
I have been doing some detail work on Lb’s aft superstructure. The 2 platforms  for the Quad Harpoons and a extra bit added in front of lower CWIS position.

                                                    Cheers Bruce

Hi Bruce Yes Mick’s father was a cracking good draughtsman   . When you do get around to the Slava   you could not have a better set  of drawings  to start with.  I like the  your development on the aft superstucture . Just by way of interest what type of  filler do you use . That lattice mast abaft of the upper CIWS  is going to be  a teaser , best of luck with that part of the build !
