Hi, relatively recent subscriber to Model Boats here,

I enjoy perusing the magazine archive, but am now unable to do so on my Windows 10 laptop as I don't have a recent Flash Player installed. Given that Adobe have stopped the use of Flash Player since December 2020 or thereabouts, this presents a bit of a problem. I've tried installing a couple of alternatives to FP, but haven't been able to get them to work.

Presumably, other subscribers to Model Boats have encountered the same problem and overcome it? Or is nobody now able to access earlier magazines in the archive?

I'd be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction to solve this problem.

I realise that this probably isn't the right place to ask this question, but I've got no idea where else I can ask it, so apologies for that.

      Thanks in advance for suggestions,

      John Jones

          Hi Johannes,

The topic has been discussed here:

          **LINK**

The archived magazine files for all the magazine titles are having to be converted and it is rather a long job, especially as the Covid situation has meant that only limited resources are available to do it.

I really do think that it is time a little pressure was applied. It is now 2 months since I was told that the conversion was underway and that they hoped to have it done by the new year. In the two months (6 weeks excluding Xmas) they have converted around a dozen magazines. At this rate the archive will take years to complete.

It doesn't matter to print only subscribers but it is very important to the value of the digital subscription.

Surely this conversion is ideal for work from home?

              Chris,

I'm not sure what you expect me to do about it, I'm not an MTM employee and have no influence on management operating policies.

It's not a question of working from home, it is a resource issue, people have to be paid.

My understanding is that, while important to some, the digital archives are not extensively used and I assume that work on them is prioritised accordingly.

You can of course contact the managing director Owen Davies and express your concerns directly.

I am not expecting you to do anything as I realise that you can't.. Th editor says she has no knowledge and passes on my emails and then I get what seem to me like platitudes from the office.

Thanks you for the suggestion of Owen Davis. I will follow it up.

One of the main reasons that i took the digital subscription was the archive. I am feeling cheated.

Thanks for the information, Colin. At least I now know what's going on.

One of the features that made the Flash Player readable mags enjoyable was that it was possible to print out pages of interest, purely for my own use, I hasten to add. I hope I'm not breaching any copyright rules by doing this, but there is quite a lot of useful information for someone like myself, i.e. just starting out on building model boats. I'd buy the relevant back issues if it was possible to do so, but apart from a couple of recent issues, I haven't found any.

There doesn't seem to be any way of printing out the more recent (HTML5?) archived issues. Unless someone can tell me otherwise, of course. But I suspect that the copyright thing might be an issue here.

Thanks again for filling me in on what's happening.

                      John (Johannes)

Do you have a digital Issue subscription ?, if you do then you can view back issues on pocket Mags from the point you started your subscription and are able to print off any pages you require.

You can use the snipping tool supplied with W10, probably other versions, although the copy is not that great it might do depending what you need.

Also re back issue, I assume you have looked on Ebay and also the magazine Exchange site ?.

I've just taken out a digital subscription, having read that it's possible to read and print out back issues, so I'll see how that goes.

I'm not familiar with the snipping tool in W10 (I mainly use Linux and only use Windows if I absolutely have to), but I'll have a look for it.

Yes, I've looked on Ebay, but I haven't heard of the magazine Exchange site. I'll have a look for it.

I find ScreenHunter a much better snipping tool than the one in Windows 10..

Yes you can print pages from issues in your Pocketmage subscription but I can only do so 2 pages at a time which mean articles are often 3 or 4 files long..
