I have just covered a Racing Sparrow yacht with glass cloth and air curing single part resin. This is the first time I have used this method. The cloth had to go on it two half’s as the first attempt to cover in one resulted in waste. I could not get it to stretch to shape or lay flat.
Some one suggested putting it at an angle to the line of the keel line but I was too late for that option.
Having now covered the yacht it needs spraying with primer/ filler. I can then sand it all nice and flat. Possibly using a bit of knifing putty as I progress.

The air curing resin seems to be ok but how many coats on top of the cloth should I use?
now the cloths on it soon shows up any defects which will need filling and sanding now the cloths on

        Bri,

The idea is to put enough resin on to fill the weave and get a smooth surface. Then, as you say, use filler to smooth out any hollows. A suitable filler would be Isopon P38 as it sands easily.

If the hollows are a bit deep then a little more cloth and resin over them to build up the surface will also work as it can be sanded down to blend in with the adjoining areas.

As always at this stage – take your time!

            Hi Brian,

The water based resin has no body to it like epoxy, I’d use 5 coats minimum, Its not a great idea to rub it down in my experience as you will be through to the wood in no time 🙂

Rather late now but the filling should be done before the glass cloth !!  🙂

            Regards Ray
