Happy Trafalgar day to everyone!

We always remember and celebrate with a small party and play Rule Britannia from the last night at the proms. Later, Horatio gets a one gun salute from mi black powder cannon.

Thanks Colin, they are excellent pictures. At the bottom is a picture of mi cannon. When I was looking for the colour of the under carriage I contacted The Royal Armory and eventually the Victory preservation organisation for the paint code. Apparently during her recent restoration, after scraping of many layers of paint, they all decided the original colour was different, and that’s how she’s painted now. I have the codes (need to find them) if any body is interested.

Yes, the original colours seem to have been rather lighter in shade, almost pink. This one ws taken in 2019.

Thanks Colin and Richard. Dug mi notes out and this just might help any Victory fans.

Andrew Bains is the Deputy Executive Director of Museum Operations that amongst other things take care of HMS Victory. Here’s an extract from an e-mail he kindly sent me on 14 June 2022.

“RAL Colour on HMS Victory.

I’m afraid there isn’t a RAL colour reference for the Victory colour, nor is there a RAL that comes close.

What we use on the hull now is mixed to a NCS number NCS S 3020-Y40R.”

Mi local paint shop had no trouble with the code and easily mixed me a tin. I’m a bit colour blind but it does look right (to me).

The Sea Cadet Association holds an annual Trafalgar day parade in the square, and when in the cadets I participated in dozens of parades in the Kingston “Steadfast” unit band. It was always freezing cold, but a great experience marching from horse guards parade, through Admiralty arch and on to the square.

Awful place to play in, Horseguards due to the echo off the walls and slippery gravel underfoot.

Hi Ashley,

Well done you. I’m sure the RN and related associations will have remembered. I saw nothing on the news other than heard a brief comment on radio 4 at 5am as part of the ‘this day in history’ commentary.

We had our usual celebration party and Nelson got his one gun salute. Only one person asked about the flag on mi car and if there was a football match on. He’d never heard of Nelson, Trafalgar or Victory!

The BBC should surely have a 2 minute slot available to report on the parade in the square of a national hero.?

But then I suppose he is not PC enough.

Oh, I don’t know Ashley, he did reputedly ask Captain Hardy to kiss him….

I have always been interested in history myself as it offers a perspective on world events which most people lack today. The saying that those who neglect history are are doomed to repeat it is all too true.

Another consequence of not having a grasp of history is that people today apply today’s standards to times gone by and have no understanding of the conditions that framed the views of people who lived back then and prompted their actions. As another saying has it, ‘The past is another country – they do things differently there’.

In the future there will be many things we take for granted today which will be roundly condemned by our descendants and our predictions of the future will turn out to be a lot different to what we currently anticipate. Back in Edwardian days there was a lot of concern that increasing traffic in our towns would result in them becoming knee deep in manure, and then the internal combustion engine became universal.

Times change.

A Grandfather x 6 was on the deck at the time, and Nelson said to Hardy.

” What silly ***** put that raised plaque there”
