      Hi Ashley

The magic word is ballast which, as you know will counter the sail effect from the superstructure. Sorry if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs but I wouldn't be encouraging Bob to build the model if I hadn't already thought about these kind of problems.

The ship is similar in performance to an axe bow vessel and goes through the water rather than ride over it so hydrodynamic lift isn't so important.

Just looking at the depth IN the water as opposed to that above water. It is certainly a sail and no mistake, and so my initial comment of making the bottom a bit deeper to get the ballast low. I take on board your comment that you are designing a ship on a scale basis and would not want to compromise of this.

It may be, just having had another look at pictures, that the tumblehome will play a bigger part in the perceived stability /wind issue than meets the eye…

I would not want to suggest it for yours obviously, but if I was building a Zummy I would consider a water filled stabilising tube to dampen oscillations AND also stabilisers, possibly active or just large bilge keels. It just concerns me that even without too much topweight it is still a sailing ship, and although may well be stable in itself, will be affected by wind horribly.

Like I said, it needs wheels, preferably on a hinged mounting so they are always in contact with the bottom of the pond…..

Colin, you are a man of vision. I may well have to surrender the "unusual boat" crown to you with thinking such as this. Ashley

A Christmas cunning plan from Colin's bumper fun book?

I could see that idea almost working!

Keep those crazy ideas coming, Colin……Heath Robinson wouldn't have come up with that one!

Don't worry about loosing your crown as there is no chance of us using anything as exotic as hardboard. The intention is to use a pumped ballast system.

Please don't encourage Bob….he will end up putting pram wheels on it.
