This is my first major boat build and some help is required. I am OK with the sanding and yacht varnishing the mahogany veneer parts, but the issue is with the underside of the hull, which is plywood, and needs to end up gloss white. So do I varnish (to seal) then sand then prime then gloss paint, or do I just go straight to priming and glossing?? And which gloss white is best for boats like this? I will seal the hull inside with thinned resin, but it is sealing the outside that cocerns me – I would be most grateful for you experience please? Regards, Keith

          Hi Keith

I generally use straight resin to seal the outside of the hull.

The Queen I traded had no spray rails or chine rails and is a very wet running boat.

It requires weight in the stern even with a 3S 5800mah Lipo in the stern.

It is going to get the rails and a repainted bottom after I finish the 3 projects I am working on.

With this isolation the workshop getting a good workout !!!

          Keep safe

              Hi Keith,

As you have varnished Mahogany topsides as a feature of the Queen design, I'd varnish them first to prevent them getting stained, then you could mask the topsides to protect them and paint the plywood bottom with primer rubbed down between coats and 2 coats of white enamel paint. Real plywood boats were only painted this way for years and they were left in the water for years.

              Regards Ray

Seem to remember GG using smooth Hammerite white (contradiction there) on his Midwest Fantail Launch – purchased some but so far have not had anything to use it on – as I sold my kit & steam engine,

Should imagine its as hard and durable on wood as it is on metal .

                    Hi Ray –

All locked down from midnight 26th for 3 weeks – we are only allowed out for meds, food & essential services ! Trying to avoid going out for 14 days at least in any event – see how things go then,

Army & Police are patrolling and have roadblocks . Not sure it will only be for 3 weeks at this stage – so keeping out of mischief and getting around to outstanding bits & pieces. Boat building next.

                    Regards

What kind / make of primer have you used (cellulose, acrylic or oil based)

                          Hi Steven,

I pretty much use Humbrol enamel paint for everything, brush applied 😀 the small tins to a long way.

                          Regards Ray

I use almost anything. Have been using artists acrylic lately..Humbrol..Dulux polyurethane.

My take on this is that any paint is suitable (almost), considering the time they spend in the water.

Currently I have raided the emulsion tin in the shed, it is a nice light blue, and being bathroom paint, waterproof!

As with most model builders I will use any paint that I have in the shed, safe in the knowledge that I know what I am doing, but this doest help Steve who has already started the process and used a specific type of paint.

We all know mixing different types of paint can cause the havoc of crinkling so we should be advising Steve that he matches the paint type before encouraging him to raid his shed for the three quarter empty paint tins.

                                Ashley (very unreasonable)
