      Hi All,

I'm back with more questions. I've been looking at builds, threads, blogs here and there and a question arises; why is the engine in the scale Huntsman always so far forward within the hull with a long propshaft? Nearly every model you see has this arrangement so there must be a reason for it? Big boats are my experience and the engine/s are always nearer to the stern.

Love me or hate me, ignore me or shoot me down in flames but I have decided to go down the twin engine route with appropriate hull strengthening, probably with 2x low kv, low watt inrunners and hence the question, can I place the motors further to the stern with short props,, more like a 'real' Huntsman?

Just looking at my kit (it has now arrived, great design btw!&#128521, I think if I lower the motors as much as possible and go for a 3 blade brass 35mm prop, I will be able to get the right angle through the hull with a short prop and still have enough room behind the twin brass rudders?

I could always use prop uj's to get a better angle through the hull. This boat won't be racing flat out, I am more interested in getting it looking right when on display but I also want it to ride well in the water, hence the questions!

I'm also looking for a pair of brass skegs/p brackets. I don't have the tools or capability to scratch build some, so if anyone can advise?

As always, looking forward to the opinions and ideas from fellow modellers!

      Thanks.

Joe. It’s well known that the engines on the real thing are at the rear in order to balance the weight of the g&t cases in the cabin, simple as that.😎

As to why the motors on a model are at the front on a model, well, DM will tell you!

              Hi Joe

Reason they end up at the front is due to keeping the angle of the prop shaft low around 11 or 12 degrees and the fact that some of the couplings are quite long. It is thought that too steep an angle of prop shaft can cause the bow to be pushed down though IC models from years gone by often had steeply angled prop shafts. Full sized boats do have the prop shafts at a steeper angle but the weight of the boat and less performance relatively speaking means it isn't a problem.

As regards your coupling even if using a UJ type you need to have the motor shaft and prop shaft in line unless you use two UJs or a dog-bone type. On a big boat like yours with powerful motors you need something more substantial like the alloy/rubber/alloy type with things in line.

Radio Joe in his Hunters Moon build on Mahem has got his motors towards the rear of the cabin so they can be moved back to some extent particularly in bigger models.

Good on you for going with twin props. I've thought about doing it on my smaller Huntsman 31 but am sticking with single for now. Will do it on a future build though.

              Chris

                Hi All,

Thanks for the latest info, really helpful.

I am getting on with the build, would anyone be interested in taking a look at some photos? It might be helpful for me as a relative novice to have some (constructive!) critisism and pointers. If yes, should I start a new post in the builds section?

Next question is about the twin rudder set up. I read that the rudder posts should be placed as far to the stern as possible but the fins should not stick outside the hull. I am planning to mount the motors as close to the centreline as possible and this will place the rudders on the vee section of the hull. What is the best way to fix the posts vertical through the offset angle of the hull? Epoxy or are there brackets available?

Further plans are to fit the rudders (50mmx36mm brass), get the propellers (50mm brass) as close to the rudders and hull as practical, brass 'P' brackets, then work forwards to get the prop angle as narrow as possible through the hull to uj's and finally the motors, set as low as possible within the hull. Does all this sound sensible?

I notice from pictures of the real thing that the engines are placed under the cockpit, behind the seats so this is what I would like to try to replicate.

                Advice/opinions always welcome.

                Joe

                  plovers jan 17 009.jpgHi Joe,

Yes we like photos, I'm sure Dave & Chris have drawings of the full-size 31 for the shaft & rudders, here's my twin rudder set up in the H31 Precedent 34" version & a real one in the yard near me. 50mm props sounds a bit big to me and also has to increase the shaft angle to clear the bottom of the hull.

                  Regards Rayh31 001.jpg

                    Hi All,

Next question. What is the favourite radio for boaters? I have a Futaba F14 Navy that is set up for my sailing boat. I am looking to buy a new radio for the Huntsman and would like to set it up for a motor on each stick. Any recommendations please?

                    Joe

                      Hi Joe,

Why would you want to have separate control of each motor ??

                      Regards Ray

                        Hi Ray,

It's more like the real thing and gives better control in turns and when low speed maneuvering.

                        Regards

You must like making things complicated ??

don't forget the operational hydraulic trim tabs on the transom 😄😄😄,

                          Regards Ray

I have a F14 Navy which I use on several models. Can you not use that again. Only reason I use another radio for newer models is the cost of the RX for the F14. Depends if you want a 2.4 ghz set?

I have a Radiolink AT9 which I am happy with.

                                  Hi Dave,

Oh yes they were on the standard boat in your photo, I must have seen them fitted on the go faster version 😉

Thought you would pick up on Joe's bow thruster ??I

BTW that's a great photo ✔ it's interesting that there is an external keel, and those angled "P" brackets would be hard to get right 😎

                                  Regards Ray
