The Cover and Contents of the December 2009 issue of Model Boats can now be seen on the Home Page.

The December issue carries some of the excellent images from the recent website photographic competition plus a superlative shot of Mike Pendlebury’s lifeboat photo on the cover – you really can’t distinguish between the model and the real thing.

I have been trying to look through some of the back numbers without much success.

Double clicking on the picture of the edition required will bring the magazine up but it does take long time to load and some pages are missing.

I only want to see the contents list so that I can view articles which specifically interest me (steam for instance)

To save loading time, would it not be advantageous to load the index pages initially and if there is not an article in the magazine about the desired subject further browsing could be done  through other indexes with less delays?

Or am I missing some technical point!

                Any comment?, Regards, Fred Graham

                  Fred,

The’missing’ pages should just be advertising content. Everything else should be there.

The system works on blocks of PDF files for each magazine so there is no distinction between different types of page content such as contents. However there is a very good way to bring up information you may be interested in and that is by using the Text Search facility. If you click on any issue and load it you will see a heading at top left entitled ‘Menu’. Click on that to bring up a series of options. One of these is ‘View Contents’ but i’m afraid that doesn’t actually do anything at the moment! The important one is ‘Search for Text’ You can then enter a word or phrase and the system will seach the text for it. You can confine the search to the currently displayed issue or make it a global seach covering all issues by ticking the ‘Search back issues’ box.

If for example you just type in the word ‘Steam’ and apply globally you will get dozens of hits. You can click on any of these to display the articles found. You may need to be patient if your broadband connection is not very fast though.

                  Hope this helps.

                          Hi,
May I just say how much better it is to have reproductions of the plan elevation rather than some of the poor photographs in the plans section of My Hobby Store. It’s something that has needed doing for years, so well done!
Just two small things- they don’t enlarge very much on the website and some of the boats are in very strange categories. Still, can’t win ’em all. At one stage there seemed to be a threat of losing the plans altogether so this is great.

I shall be away (again!) from tonight Monday 5th July until late evening Friday 9th.  It’s a tough job supporting the Euro Tourist Industry but somebody has to do it.

Actually just a short break across the Channel near Boulogne. I hope to have another look around the Somme battlefields while we are there.

                                                    To All MB readers.

Aah well, it won't be long before the Winter Special drops on the mat and we get a chance to read probably the last Model Boats edited and overseen by Paul Freshney. After 10 years at the helm Paul will go down in history along with other fine editors like Vic Smeed and John Cundell who have all ensured that 'our' mag was always interesting, topical and filled with projects and articles that inspire.

As an avid reader and collector of Model Mags, looking back through Model Maker Mag of the last century!! up to the magnificent MB. mag of today it is plain to see the influence the editors have made over time. Today Model Boats stands as the only one of its type in the country, which is a shame, but clear and concise articles, bright and sharp photographs, nicely spaced and well thought out, articles that give enough details so that readers can have a go at them themselves and all write ups have a beginning, a middle and an end, given readers satisfaction and closure.

I feel Paul has in many ways been instrumental in bringing our magazine into the 21st century and embracing the best modern technology and computers that we have today….I hope and trust his successor will continue to do so.

Well done Paul and thank you for all your endless hours at the PC correcting our diabolical English, your hard work stands as a memorial to your effort and enthusiasm and people who read and collect mags like MB will go back over and over them and gain considerable enjoyment today and into the future.

I hope you and Rose have long and happy retirements, you've earned it.. Well done again.

Thank you for your kind words – I can say no more, but now H.M. Government is giving me a bit more than it takes in income tax every 4 weeks, yes, I am a happy bunny!
