          Hi Andrew

I had a design called Wetjet published in Model Boats June 2007 it was powered with a ducted fan, but could equally be powered conventionally with a propeller in the water, I think it was only 24" long but did have a double sponsons with a tunnel and twin rudders. If you'd like to know more PM me via this forum.

Hmmm, that's a cute tunnel boat Ray! Doesn't look too hard to construct, either…?

Can you send me some more info about it?

                    220416 008.jpgThanks Andy

Diamond was my first effort to build a proper ship and got me back into model boat building, inspired by a visit to Chatham dockyard when my grandson and I walked around HMS Cavalier, as a believer in having a go at everything at least once Diamond was scatch built in balsa and ply from the Myhobby store 1/96 scale plans and took about 3 years on and off HMS Belfast will start soon, but I've been saying that for 2 years.

                    Regards Ray

Hi Ray, job well done, looking forward to your Belfast build, another grand old Lady, I can remember Cavalier when she was in commission. As a matter of interest, what scale was your Thames sailing Barge ? I would like to have a go at constructing one for my next build

                        Hi Andy

My barge Veronica is 1/24th scale approx. 42" long was built by Peter Simmonds of the Isle of White to the design by Richard Chesney, its published by Traplet with excellent drawings on 8 sheets, a CNC cut set of bulkheads and a building DVD is available to purchase. AMBO the Association of Model Barge Owners run a series of match's in the South East through the Summer and is great fun Regards Raybarges emma nb 10 may 013.jpg

Hi Ray, your barge Veronica is a good example of a sailing barge and at that size it would be not too big to transport, So it looks like I will be off to the store in the near future to purchase a set of plans for it. Do the lee boards help with drift when sailing and how do you control them, or are they fitted as per plan ? Great pic, I would like to See the South East matches but I am a little too far away. Thanks for your help in locating a set of plans.

                            Hi Andy

The leeboards are non functional, we rely on the fin keel & lead bulb for sailing as model yachting practice. I have seen a barge with steel operational leeboards which were controlled by RC but it was rather tender to wind strength and it didn't point very well so wasn't very competitive. The rig on Veronica is dismountable down to the height of the spit for transporting.

                            Regards Ray

Hi Ray, thanks for the tip, Looking at the photo you posted I can see from the various models that there are extensions to both Fin and keel, and guess thats all thats needed. Thinking ahead The rudder extension wouldn't have to be too broad but long and tapered like shown in the photo, to prevent any drag on turning. It looked an interesting days sailing ahead. I am thinking of having a removable underslung motor to help with turning in light winds, i built a barge yacht our of solid balsa and wished that i had thought of my earlier suggestion as in light winds I find it difficult turning
