      Hi Colin,

Yes a bit of a trek 275 miles, the last part through the mountains is a driving experience I’d never had !! but so spectacular , only 5 1/2 hours, but my motto is use it or lose it, so I’m enjoying it (the drive) 🙂

      Regards Ray

20240523_070156my first attempt at simulating clinker built boat at such a small scale (5ins long) not totally happy with end result , but it will do for the time being.20240523_070019

Mick, just an observation offered as help, if you follow the link I posted at the beginning of this thread you will see from the picture that the ship’s ‘Jolly Boat’ has a transom stern.  Fairly typical of this sort of small ship’s boats.  Your boat would look more realistic if you could include a transom stern on it.  At the other end the stem post would usually be straight for such a utility boat.

If you start with a straight line sort of profile at either end then you will get a lot closer to a realistic shape.

Richard this what i like about this forum . You get good advice and observations that are helpful . Thanks for the comment and I can see what you mean about the profile shape, I’ll go back and give it another go.

I knew I had it somewhere!  This is a scan of the plan I used to build the dinghy above.  You can see the profile and plan to aim for with it.

Thanks for the plan Richard , I’m using the profile to carve a new ships boat . The way I’m doing it is to cut out the keel profile in 3mm ply and then putting balsa blocks each side and then  carving out the shape .Once the shape is reached I’m planking the solid Block with card to simulate clinker planks then painting with marine varnish . The technique seems to work reasonably well . I’ve not got the eye sight or dexterity to make a 41/2″ ships boat any other way and it seems to produce a reasonable facsimile of the real thing.

                      Regards Easty

I think your technique works perfectly well and I’m sure you’ll be a lot happier with it the second time.  You might be surprised at how many times experienced modellers aren’t happy with the first time they do something so end up doing it again!

20240604_135910further update ,some railings have been fitted on the superstructure, the funnel fitted ( rather pleased with the way the steam whistle came out). The ships boat made after three attempts,  still not totally happy with it but it will do for the time being. Still lots to do ,next job painting the hull not my favourite job  . It’s funny how close up photos show the defects in the build but I’m going to age and rust up the model so hopefully that will cover them and anyway the steam trawlers in the day were quite rough from extended trips .

                                Hi Mick,

Nice sharp work, the brass stanchions are always worth the money 🙂

All the best Ray  (just off to Majorca on Thursday)

Superb job on the handrails.  Never an easy task but the look when you get it right is well worth it.  The boat is a huge improvement and now looks “right”!

Don’t worry about photographs showing up embarrassing details, it happens to every single one of us.  The number of times I taken a picture to support an article and looked at it and realised how awful it looks!  Many modellers, including myself, advocate taking close up pictures for that very reason so we can pick out things that might need attention to improve.

A nice clean build Mick and an interesting boat.

Like you, at some stage I`m going to need to build a ships boat as well. Not got to that point yet.

As others have said , handrails do give the model that extra dimension and yours look good. So far, I`ve made mine , when needed, from brass rod and soldered together.

                                    Enjoying watching your progress.

                                    Jim.

Quick update on the model so far ,still heaps to do ie: painting the hull ( not my favourite part of a build), makeing the trawl and anchor winches ( looking forward to making them on the lathe).and 20240616_11045420240616_110414 Heaps of small details to make and fit .

Painting the hull though is going to be a huge transformation to this model and suddenly it is going to start looking like a ship!

I’m debating with my self whether to put a white line between the antifoul red and the black hull , in real life some had and others didnt. Still lots to do and I’m enjoying the journey immensely.
