          Hi all,

my wife broke her left hand before Christmas, it is a long time for me, so I will not get to the workshop before next week (I have to do all the homework, including cooking and cleaning etc etc..). Next week maybe she'll have hand in order. Meanwhile, I devote myself to the theory of sailing and balancing the rigging at present.

The situation looks like this: adding a bigger Jib I created a Capricorn model with a lee helm.but the model could be controlled without any problems-

Maybe another solution would completely eliminate the big Jib. Centre of effort could be moved backwards, and the model should then sail with weather helm,( this possibility did not come to my mind.) but sail with lesser sail area.
Experts recommend that ships with a weather helm are safer. But somewhere I read that perhaps a small lee helm at the barge is better. I'll have to try it all out. What experience do you have with the balance of the rig ??

          Greetings Tom

Hi. Tom, I'm sorry to hear of your wives accident, I hope she will soon be fully recovered.

My experience of sailing barges is nil at the moment! and very limited with other sailing boats so at the moment I am not sure if any shortcomings in the boats performance is design or helmsman induced!

I will talk to you later in the season when I have sailed Susie May a few times.

            Regards.

            Eddie.

              Hi all,

              as I wrote to Dave,

my wife now has a hand in a gypsum dressing, it looks like her hand is fine. The doctor will take her dressing off this week. But he will need further rehabilitation. For me it means I will finally have time for my hobby.

I tried to find some references to the rigging and hull ballance, I found several articles that contradict each other.
John Leather (in his book "Barges" wrote : As in many barges, the centre of Area of sails was arranged to be forward of (centre) lateral resistance with the leeboard in use, which teoretical relationship usually resulted in good ballance under sail and an easy helm in most conditions".   –  in my opinion this is also true for models with a central fin
According to this statement, my Capricorn should be then  suitably balanced.  It will be seen when I have the chance to let it out in the bigger wind.
Anyway, I will try all the options for both my models.

              Greetings   Tom

                Susie May

Susie May on the water for the first time, the sun was shining it was 11 deg. and a nice breeze blowing, it was either go to the pond or wash the car!

                Susie May

                She sails both ways!

                Susie May

I was very pleased with how she handled, very responsive to the rudder, I didn't try the leaboards I have left that for another day..

                Regards Eddie.

I went down the pub! Looking fairly mild tomorrow so will wash the car, it's absolutely filthy.

                    Hi Eddie

Well done she looks good, the secret of getting the stay sail to work is to have the line is attached half way across the cross trees 😊

                      Hi Eddie,

she looks nice on the water. We had too 11 °C – but below zero .. everything is frozen,

Today I started to make brail winch, and I will gradually make crab winches , probably again vertical, and pulleys, including the double pulley for the mainsheet. it is a slow manual work,

                      Greetings Tom

Hi. All thanks, I was pleased with her.

Ray when I saw your Veronica at Headcorn I noticed that was where you had the sheet attached, I will change mine for Sunday after I;ve washed the car!

I am going to make all the winches for Cambria from brass and hope to make them work, as you say fiddly work.

                        Best wishes to you all.

Hi. Ray, interesting that you have been up to Boston, that is where my friend lives, the one that I have refurbished two pond yachts for.

It's good to have a workshop to retire into, although other problems don't go away you can forget about them for a while.

Don't know how but I have just found myself with a paint brush and a pot of paint in my hand painting the hall, it's the centre of the house and every room opens onto it, so a few days away from the boatyardsad.

I forgot to have a lay down in a dark room 'till the feeling passed!

BTW your fishing boat looks good, I like the colour sceme, it will look good on the sideboard in the living room, so no need for a motor.

                            Regards Eddie.

                                Cambria frames

The final cardboard frames for Cambria have now been marked out onto 1/4" ply ready for cutting and final fitting to the keel before the notches for the gunwales and chines are cut, and the centres are cut away leaving just the frame. I have retained all of the water lines and the centre lines to help with setting up on the keel.

                                Cambria frames

I think I am now ready to start to finish the frames, after two pieces of 1/4" square have been added to the sides of the keel to glue the bottom skins to.

                                Regards.

                                Eddie.

                                  Hi Eddie,

I always think cutting out the centres of the bulkheads is so tedious but using a Starrett hole cutter for the corners and a coping saw does the job 😀 just tracing the bulkheads for HMS Belfast 19 of them, need to find a 6' 6" building board.

Now you have a barge to sail, you can enjoy building Cambria 😇

                                  Regards Ray

Hi. Ray, are your boats getting bigger? I agree having one barge complete I can now take my time on Cambria and hopefully build it true to prototype.

We had a wet day here yesterday, Fri. so I managed to cut all the frames using the scroll saw so can now fit them one at a time, allowing the glue to go off before fitting the next one, each frame can then be set true and there is no danger of knocking it when you try to fit the next one.

That building board will be the size of a doorlaugh.

                                    Regards.

It is starting to look really good. Cambria was always a lovely big barge. I knew her from her voyages around the East Anglian coast when I was young and living in England. I had a wherry house boat at Pin Mill where Bob Roberts lived.

Hi. Nick, it's nice to be building something that people remember seeing in her working days, I think Bob Roberts made her special by keeping her going for so long as a trading vessel, and just under sail with no engine.

As you say she is big, I hope I will be able to cope with her when she is finished.

In recent days, I have finished the production of pulleys for Gusty Cat.

The tips of my forefingers are totally abraded . Link > https://tomarack.rajce.idnes.cz/Gusty_Cat/#IMG_1560.jpg
