That's good enough, but I think it could have been twisted back into shape, quite easily?

Perfect. Once painted no one will know. How easy was that eh!!!

I always attach things/cut things/paint stuff by eye. Measure first of course, but its the eye of the beholder that sees what`s right or not right. It would only take some small detail…a fire extinguisher or something attached to the left of the cabin to completely draw the eye away from that tiny discrepancy in the cabin. Ashley

The Master of Trickery and deception has spoken

Has he mentioned his fascination with Hardboard yet?

            No?……Lucky you

He has never mentioned the hardboard Bob but if we ever meet you must. I would maybe, just maybe, pay with a pint or two to here that one.

As it happens Ashley I have a cunning plan to deceive and I will reveal it on the morrow when the clamps come off. Pleased to say it does not involve a fire extinguisher. Yet!!

Came up with this idea as somewhere to put the name or an emblem. Just need to fill and sand to make it appear as if it was intended. Talking of filling what is considered best for jobs as fine as this?

                img_1177.jpg

Another question! Does anybody purchase lettering, emblems etc' and if so where from?

                Cheers

I use Deluxe Materials' Model Lite where no particular strength is needed. Where it is then I favour their Micro Balloons mixed with epoxy. **LINK**

                      Guys

I have been hunting around the forums looking for decals and lettering and came across Crafty Computer Paper

in an older forum. Does anybody know if they still exist as safari can't find them?

An online search suggests that Crafty Computer Paper may be out of business however, if you search on 'inkjet decal paper' there are lots of alternatives.

As Bob says, if you just want letters nd numbers then BECC vinyl is usually the way to go, lots of options, very thin, waterproof adhesive and can be over varnished.

There is always an issue with blending decals into the existing finsh without them being obvious but there are special fluids to assist with this such as decal fix

Sat here with 2 packs of the BECC in my Cornwall basket but knowing I will never use the majority of them. I need 2 packs as I want small and large and of the large just the J's of which there are only 4.

I will look at the "inkjet decal paper"

                            cheers

Yes, that is the problem with vinyl. a lot of wastage in some respects depending on what you are doing. I had to make some nameplates for my fishery cruiser which are painted wooden boards attached to the aft superstructure railings – gold on black.. I simply printed them off on ordinary inkjet paper with yellow font on black background and used transparent varnish to 'glue' and seal them to the board. it looks fine.

Sounds like your best bet is to experiment with transparent inkjet decal paper and trim the excess off as close to the letters as possible, then use decal fix to help blend the lettering into the underlying surface. You will still need to use varnish of similar to seal over both though for a durable finish.

I am hoping the inkjet decal paper will allow this Bob plus I may be able to scan in an old Blakes decal from our scrapbook for the bow.
Trimming them will try my patience though unless her indoors can be roped in??

I am considering making a panel for the stern to put the name into with my left over planking to maybe make it easier.

Trimming around the overall perimeter should be sufficient. The problem usually associated with decals is when there is a wide transparent margin around the image/lettering which can be seen against the underlying finish. Just keep as close as possible to the outer edge of the image and you should be OK.

As always, make up a test piece and see.

I needed HOVERVAN lettering for my HOVERVAN, and found some sticky transparent stuff to print the lettering on to, but alas it was not waterproof, so I used off white paper, varnished. I did not try varnishing the transparent stuff (cant remember why??) but it did look good when first applied.

The issue with inkjet logos/lettering/pictures is that they fade. All the presenters on my top gear craft are looking jaded now (quite normal I suppose). I am not sure if laser printed pictures are more fade resistant??

ps…shouldn't there be a "7" instead of an A in that logo??
