        Stores to Drawing Office

Why fit a 20 inch prop shaft when a 6 inch will do the same job?

        Good question?

There are a number of reasons why I designed the model with this particular length of shaft, some of them relate to weight distribution and the layout of all three versions but most of all I don't like models with ridiculously angled shafts sticking out of the bottom.

So I am intrigued as to how you have arrived at your assumption.

              The Transom shaped and varnished

Don`t think I fancy doing 36 coats of varnish….As Paul normally spends his time!….lol

Paul…..Have we got a waterline decided yet?

                Hello Bob

                The waterline is as shown.

                ellie water line.jpg

What's wrong with 36 coats of varnish, each one carefully rubbed down with 2400grit wet & dry paper between coats producing a superb deep shine.

                  Thank you, Paul

                  A colour rendition too!

Can you add a few tasteful white stripes at the top area please…..A thick and thin please

And how about tinting the cabin a creamy colour?

That would then be food for thought!

What about a few port holes somewhere?

                  Thanks a lot………Bob

No portholes Bob, the boat isn't big enough to have a basement!

All the Broads cruisers I have seen seem to have white hulls.

                      Spoilsport!

I'll blue tack a few on to see the effect!

The Team has decided on a green hull too!

Just thinking of a Pop Pop drive?…….It would sound and smell lovely?

                      Only day dreaming…..At the moment

Sea Spray to have a white hull with gloss red below waterline; Sky Blue cabin sides, transom and forward-facing screens; roofs white. Deck is already stained Light Teak and now needs varnishing (not 36 coats, mind you…..)

I`ve decided to veneer the roof to match the deck and should look nice when viewed from above, as it skims across the Broads?

                            veneering the roof.jpg

Notice how the veneer strips are held in position along the entire glueing area, using 6mm x 6mm strips

I was watching the Salvage Hunter prog last night and Drew was in the Norfolk Broads area

So I paid great attention to the boats. As Colin says, all the hulls were white, including the roofs, with polished wood fittings

Of course, my model has a veneered roof……..Off to a bad start right away!

                                  Ah well……Nothing ventured, nothing gained?

                                    Hi Bob…

I have been watch the build through out and have been well entertained, so much I have started a scratch build from a set of plans.

Been learning a lot with all your build skills and as I progress with my own build I can appreciate how you want to stamp your own influence on your build and why not.

Great work from you and Paul.

                                    Best wishes,

                                        Hi Bob..

I have been building the motor yacht Trident (mar3618) a free plan July issue in one of the model mags.

Taking pictures as i go along and will post the build when things go quiet or i near a finish.

The article in the mag shows a few colour schemes and top deck designs from the 1960s onwards.

                                        Best regards,

Bob. You are building to a plan, but the finish is up to you and I would not let anyone sway you into accepting any boring white hulls or whatever if you like them green with a cerice bottom thats ok I think.

I think the veneer will look magnificent, and a good strong colour for the hull will set it off nicely. If it goes faster than you expect you can always put some stripes on later..

A chap at the pond, Peter, has built a canoe tailed (thats not right but i cant think of the term just now) "gentlemans cruiser" and painted it a nice maroon colour, and it looks relly good and period, its the sort of colour you EXPECT to see, well I do.

I am busy building landing craft at the moment and they are all undecoat Grey all over, so I do not have a choice issue, its quite nice really.

It won't be a white hull and as you say, maroon is a nice old fashioned sonbre colour for the old days?

Finally veneered the cabin and canopy roofs as a touch of bling!

As Ashley mentioned earlier, it looks quite pleasing in raw wood state?

Varnishing will either make it….or break it!

                                                  Good Morning Bob,

Veneer work is very nice, takes me back to my cabinet making days,

we used scotch glue in those days, so no staining of veneer ,french polish finish ,

with pads of cotton using what we called round and round ,

fine wire wool used between coats, then a fine burnished wax finish,

but this will be no good on water bound model ,

as for hull colour cream would be my choice highlites the wood finish,

dont forget the net curtains cheers Larry ……

I think that your build of Ellie looks superb and whatever colour scheme you choose will only enhance the finished product.

The design supervisor has also added her approval to the build and Jane never lets me publish anything that isn't 'just right'.

My only concern is related to the design of the canopy as having seen it 'in the flesh' I have to agree with you that it just doesn't sit right with the rest of the boat, of course this might be due to the perspective of the photograph and it might look different again when the gutter lines are fitted to the cabins but at the moment it looks chunky and lacks elegance.

I will wait until your model is finished before making a final judgement on the canopy but at the moment my gut feeling is to reduce the width by 8mm and move the supporting arms further toward the stern.

I would appreciate your comments on the canopy.
