For your single motor / shaft combo I would need to know which motor you intend to use, its overall size and where you want to mount it.

The existing motor positions are based upon a twin setup and all of the weight distribution and hydrodynamic calcs have been made on this basis. Whilst it is true to say that my first prototype ran a single engine it was very much a movable feast as far as the calcs were concerned.

          Hello Nigel

          Many thanks for your interest.

The hull is practically watertight already, but to make sure, we will varnish the inside with a couple of coats of varnish.

Then the outside of the hull will also get a few coats of paint too

          Thanks for looking in

The canopy is built as a free standing assembly and will be easy to position along the cabin walls

The windscreen has side walls added for easy installation and rigidity

I trust this meets with the approval of the Drawing Office?

The windscreen looks super and with your permission I will be adding the side screens to the design.

I can also report that the elusive Mr X is at the same build stage and that his version of SeaSpray looks every bit just as good as yours.

Time for Sea Spray…………..and Mr X is revealed. Sorry, Bob, but I didn't actually deny building one; I just asked where you'd got the idea from (an old taxman's trick).

                ellie 55a.jpg

                Specifications are:

                Keel and frames 6mm liteply
                Hull skins 1.5mm marine ply
                Deck 3mm liteply
                S/S sides 1.5mm marine ply
                S/S frames 3mm liteply
                Cabin roof 4.5mm balsa planking
Wheelhouse roof 2mm obechi planking (ply sheet looked horrible)
Cockpit sides & floor 1.5mm ply
Adhesive used SuperPhatic and Aliphatic Resin throughout.

The next task is to tidy up the workshop, which is ankle-deep in dust! After that it's fit the chine spray rails and then the running gear and motors. Gonna be fun squeezing a servo and the linkage to two rudders into that little space under the rear hatch, but Fearless Leader says it should be a doddle….

Yeah, Paul…………if you say so. It looks easy on CAD.

                    The rear hatch construction….

Two formers were cut out, using the transom `s top edge as a template and clamped to the hatch lid to obtain the correct curvature

Any chance of you supplying me with a motor, ESC, prop shaft and brass prop for Ellie?

You are the undisputed expert in these things

You can put ten quid on for your troubles………or what ever!

Many thanks in anticipation of your undisputed kindness

ps….If the model takes off……You could make a few bob?

Thanks for the offer but I'm no longer active in the retail business – apart from helping at shows. ACTion never supplied running gear anyway.
I would recommend Model Boat Bits (Steve Tranter) for shafts, couplings and props. Mark's Model Bits (Mark Windless) also make nice shafts and flexible couplings.
ACTion speed controllers are (naturally) the best – Component-Shop now make and sell them. Microgyros' FR40 is also a tried-and-recommended unit for higher current motors; it has BEC and LiPo low-voltage slowdown/shutdown too. You should be able to get all of these at the Blackpool show in 3 weeks.
For a single screw I'd be inclined towards fitting a Graupner Speed 700BB Turbo 12v (Part #6317). This revs at a reasonably sensible speed and would be ideally suited to those 12v NiMH packs left over from SloMoshun. A 3-blade 45mm brass prop should be a good start (Raboesch Type A). Cornwall MB has these motors in stock @ £26. NB avoid any of the other 700BB Turbos – they're too fast for this model. If you're coming to Blackpool then ask Mark @ A Model World about the motor – he usually has bucket-loads in stock!
My version of Sea Spray will be fitted with twin Speed 600 ECO motors running on 7.2v with 40mm 3-blade props.

Paul, the boats you have designed look wonderful in the flesh, so to speak, and both Bob and Dave are to be congratulated on fantastic builds too- I can just picture the Sea Spray coming towards the camera in a wide turn- can't wait! The prototypes will certainly inspire more to build these attractive craft, I'm sure.

                            Well done all!

                                Ian & Dave

Thank you both for your comments I can't tell you how good it is to know that my work has inspired you.

Praise has to go to both Bob and Dave for taking on an unproven design and building such wonderful examples, Bob especially as he did his build in the full glare of the forum membership and publicly overcame the occasional problem with good grace and humour.

I am back working on the MTB version which had been put on hold whilst I did a little job for Ashley and all being well this version of the design should be completed in a couple of weeks then all I have to do is build and test it before publishing the entire set of designs.

This has been a long journey but as an end result we should raise some much needed charity funds and I will forever be in debit to Bob and Dave for all of their commitment.

We went to Holyhead last week and kept a wary eye open for a suitable colour scheme for Ellie

Looking particulary for a green and white combo

Only found one…..Not surprising really, since it`s a dated old fashioned scheme…..

                                  holy green boat.jpg

                                  Not bad?

Saw a suitable suggestion for a name though………"Bobbing Along"

Just wondering, Paul……..I wouldn`t be surprised if our cruiser was fitted with a sail in the old days?…..They were common at Holyhead

                                    Hello Bob

Green and white combo looks good. I don't think that the hull is a suitable shape for a sail as it doesn't have sufficient keel to counteract the sideways force of the sail.

Strangely enough I used to encounter and old gentleman who sailed alone in the Broads in a small sailing cruiser called 'Bobalong'. It was always kept immaculate with a royal blue hull, red underbody with white boot topping and varnished topsides- and always a red ensign. Some years later I sold my 16' yawl to a gent who seemed to collect boats in a barn- and what did I find there?  Bobalong, being restored.

Bob, I like the apple green- anything darker would be a bit dull I think. What about a nice rich cream with the apple green underneath? No sail, although the Broads sailing cruisers don't have much underneath them either as the waters are so shallow.

I look forward to someone building the MTB- and I'm very tempted by Sea Spray, I'll probably buy it anyway as I'm a sucker for plans and -it's for charity.

                                          All the best,

I had to varnish it at this stage, to protect the veneer, as it is very brittle and only 0.010" thick

Working on the Sponson is a pleasant job

Note how the hull is resting on a block of wood held in the vice and the other end is restrained by the litter bin!

A clean sheet of ply is resting on the damp veneer to prevent rusting

I am so happy that you decided to have a varnished deck, I didn't want to push you this way but I really wanted to see Ellie with varnish and bless you for going the whole distance with a varnished Transom as well.

Hope I have enough veneer for the cabin roofs

We are at Conway at the moment, looking for inspiration

Bob, you are at that happy stage where the boat (or whatever it is you are making) is all most finished and it is all “in the wood” and you can see all the work that you have put into it, those beautiful sanded joints and smooth expanses of pale plyood and/or woteva..and then it all gets covered in paint!
