Thanks Dave, I'll use whatever Paul recommends

I will use the twin version, as cutting through the keel is a pain

Daves suggestion of the 600 ECOs sounds super but as always cost is going to be an implication so it might be best to stick with a pair of 550s

If you can find any the Speed 600 ECOs are about £13 each. Westbourne Models are showing them but they don't change their website very often. Also try 'A Model World' or 'Cornwall Model Boats' (or Model Slipway). The problem with buying a generic "550" is that you often don't know how many windings it has or how thick they are. That means that the low-current pussycat you thought you were buying could in fact pull your arm off on 6 volts. 'Speed' motors are a known quantity and the same physical size as 550s.

            Memo from the design office.

I specified the Johnson 550s simply because they are a very common motor and easy to get hold of, I would imagine that like me most model boat builders have a paired set somewhere in the workshop. The generic size of the 550s also allow plenty of scope for more expensive substitutes.

                  Charge Hand to Drawing Office…..

How about adding a tenon to the keel to locate the Transom?

Gladys the Tea Lady has made the suggestion!

I intended the transom to be unbroken and without any protrusions to allow the builder the option of varnishing. It would aid the build though to have some kind of rebates to locate the keel and stringers.

I dunno, the boat is not built yet and there is controversy over the motor size!!

As the mount for a speed 600/550/540/500 will all be exactly the same, I should think this is a golden opportunity to try, once built- and providing motors are to hand..a selection of those suggested to see what the performance difference is exactly.

In fact, what am I saying, Bob, just buy several sets of motors and submit your expense sheet to the D.O and have done with it!

Hey up! Ashley….Welcome aboard the good ship…..Ellie!……..A vintage Broads Cruiser

The motors are really only a minor bit of trivia!….We are only thinking out loud and exploring all possibilities, before we take the plunge!

The design is now in it's final stages, overshadowed by the shop floor production team and Gladys, the newly promoted ideas team member

Paul has been very bold in designing a multipurpose hull, with a plethora of assorted superstructures!

We are having a bit of light relief in the meantime, as you may have noticed!

Casting all this frivolity aside, the main purpose of our mission is to create a set of good working plans, that can be sold in aid of charity

As Bob says the primary objective is to raise as much money as possible for the charities and the purpose behind this thread is to raise awareness of the new designs and hopefully encourage people to buy them.

There will be frivolity and even some controversy but in the end we will have all been involved in helping a lot of people, many of whom are far less fortunate than we are.

I hope that everyone will stay with us for the duration of the build and add their comments or questions as we progress.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far.

                              Hello Tony

                              Thanks for dropping in

There's not much to photograph………. The formers are being cut out at the moment and we are making improvements to the design……We are back on the motor debate this morning!

The current hot weather conditions are slowing production down too!

While you are here, the Starlet model has been found to be grossly out of shape!

The mast is 12mm off centre!……Not a pretty sight!

The hot weather is certainly a problem. Makes everyone feel like doing no more than sitting in the back garden, watching the world go by.

Sorry to hear of the Starlet problems. Not always easy to resolve these type of in-built issues.

Despite my previous comments, the build log of Ellie is an interesting thread.

                                Tony.

                                  Dear Reader

The motor debate rumbles on as I am starting to think that I might have missed an opportunity with not specifying 600s.

I have been so engrossed in the broads cruiser variant that I have forgotten that the other two versions are high speed boats i.e. a sports fisher and an MTB, and both of these types would benefit from more powerful and predictable motors.

However as the motors are all basically the same size and will all fit on the standard engine bearers there is still time for contemplation and further debate.

Throwing this open for comments and bearing in mind that there is no right or wrong answer……. What do YOU think?

                                  Paul

I think this is a smashing idea from start to finish-designing and selling plans for charity, and then building a prototype under the watchful, and possibly critical eyes of forum members(!) -and who better to pull it off than Paul and Bob? I think Ellie is a very pretty boat and having spent holidays for the last twenty two years or so pootling around the Broads in small dinghys, it is a type I know well. There's no better place for spotting traditional boats than the Broads in my opinion and you can still hire wooden cruisers like this at Martham on the Thurne.

Being a bear of little brain I could see no possible build fault in your photo Bob- so you must tell us what you thought it was!

Keep up the good work Paul and Bob- we're all following your work (and banter) with interest and amusement.

By the way, I built a Starlet which I turned into a Yachting World Senior look-a-like with gaff rig- wrong on every level.smiley

My fright this morning was that when the hull was turned over, I first thought the feet on the profiles would not be square on the building board!

But all is well, thank goodness

I must say I'm very attracted by this cruiser- just my sort of thing. Will you finish it bright or use a painted finish for the sake of simplicity? I could be very tempted myself when all the bugs are ironed out. But then I'm well known for sitting in the middle of the road muttering, 'Poop- poop', just like Mr Toad when the latest craze comes along -must stay focussed.

I've just put the last plank in the deck of Veleta so some progress there.

                                                    Hello Ian

I was hoping to have the very shiney varnished wood effect like a Broads cruiser…….with some sneaky acrylic paint enhancements here and there before varnishing

But we`ll see…..Must make a nice job of it though…….The Doc has put a lot of effort into this design!
