I would have used some kind of plug to make the vent around, although not made to such a fine tolerance, but the locating pin would have been an after thought.

Have you ever thought about how these stanchions are made? They are perfectly formed and identical in every respect

They are made on multi axis NC machines, probably running at least 30,000 rpm with multiple cross drill heads. The drilled holes are a little work of art in theselves.

They probably run all day and night to keep up with production and I would guess the cycle time about 10 secs…….Incredible!

Yes Bob these machines are impressive, in my previous life as a Mechanical Design Engineer I would get to visit the major Engineering exhibitions at the NEC. I always remember seeing a Machining Centre producing a 3 cylinder crankshaft from a solid steel billet measuring approx. 1 1/2 metre long by 3/4 metre dia. All machining done including the oilways. The carousel tool holder was housed in a seperate enclosure as big as the apartment I live in!! Getting back to the Glasgow, 10 thou thick vac formings, are they taking the proverbial ****. What is the hull thickness? More I hope.

          Cheers, Terry.

            Hello Terry

I too was a design engineer, many years ago, we used to make Robotic tool changers for the big machine companies……Asquiths…..Cincinnati…..Noble and Lund……Herberts Now sadly, all a distant memory

We used to go to the NEC too, the NC machines were awesome to watch, like you say

The ten thou plastic is for the cowls……The hull is a whopping twenty five thou….in parts!

              Hello Bob

Regarding the stanchions, I have a vision of a factory in China with the employees working Adam Smith style doing the same single action over and over again as the stanchion passes down the production line. After all it worked for pin making and workers in China are cheaper than advanced NC machines.

The chimney top rim looked rather uninspiring as supplied, so I got my engineering hat on and spun the edge over and the result is quite nice

Full story of the method used, appears in "Ureka Moments"

Most kit manufacturers are careful not to produce plans from which a model can be built for commercial reasons – they want you to buy their kit! Usually the key omission is the hull lines or body plan as they provide a readymade hull making these unnecessary in the kit drawing.

Many kit drawings are not full size and detail is only shown in general terms rather than accurately.

I`m really impressed with the level of detail included in this kit and the cabin section will really come alive when the handrails and chimney details are in place, in the meantime, anotther WIP picture…..To help future builders

                                              Hello Larry

I hope you like the naval appearance now?

The rivet effect is thick artist paper with a mechanical centre punch creating the rivet heads

It`s very easy and rivets always look nice when painted

I think it would be very difficult to build from the kit plan, there are no contours shown for the hull shape.

The chimney stays should have been wire, but it was almost impossible to do a decent job, so I opted for elastic cotton

It`s a shame to paint the brass pipes, but it needs doing
