nice work Bob just one point on the expanding foam.

1 part foam is open cell so if water comes in contact with a cut surface it acts like a sponge, also as pointed out earlier the expansion of this foam is pretty powerfull and if in a closed space its a case of distortion at least and destruction at worst. I have used it in the past to say add strength to a bow section. lady sarah (AKA the homewood landing 24) being a case in point but you must do it with an open deck and leave best part of 4 days for large cross sections of foam to go off before cutting.

also if filling big voids do so a little at a time or huge bubbles occour making it a pain to trim easily and tidily.

to clear the tubes on the disposably cans of foam for resuse use nail varnish remover to clear the tube while the foam is still wet

      Hope this all helps

Just to add to Phil's comments, it is still possible for distortion to occur with open decks if the top part cures more quickly than the underlying depths! I have always found it to be quite tricky material to use and personally would never use it for model boating having heard too many horror stories. Bubblewrap is an option.

          Thanks Phil and Colin

With such a flimsy hull, I'll stick to ping balls or even a small plastic milk bottle

Another option is to use 2mm dia polystyrene balls or the quaver shaped polystyrene packaging. Wrap them in a plastic bag and position them where needed.

When managing construction projects I banned the use of expanding foam from site not only because of the damage it causes but also because it covers bad workmanship.

Made a start on the superstructure, which, to me, was very difficult to sort out!

I thought these bits were part of the build

Won`t throw them away just yet!

Are the plans or instructions a bit vague as its not like you to be confused about building a paddle boat.

When do you expect the big launch to be?

I found the plans lacking enough info, incorrect part numbers, the off cuts looked like actual build parts and it was over subscribed with Senior moments!

I would be interested in other builders comments, but they seem to be few and far between

There is no planned launch day……..Months away yet!

                      Bob,

Spoken like a true scratch builder , had the same problems when i help build my sons ….

DUSSELDORPH FIRE BOAT , came with a translation page and some parts not numbered ,

the electrics where a nightmare , over built and expencive , my son is cheque book modeler

so got suck in by model shops mostly selling air craft so very little boat experance ….

going back to my trawler with plan and hull faults after holidays. ……Larry…DUSSELDORPH80).j

I haven`t read the instructions, as they are printed too small, I would need a magniying glass and that`s just too much like hard work

They are not that useful anyway……..The list of parts is useful, however

                          Talk about OTT!

The little cabin had an intentional wavy bottom, so I couldn`t level the top edge up nicely

So it was in the lathe and do the job properly with a sanding block in the tool post!

A bit daft, I know, but it was no problem for me!

                          cabin clean up.jpg

Another shining example for the need for a lathe in the model boaters workshop?

                          Bob…….LOL

It was very difficult to get the top edge parallel to the baseplate

Hello Duckie…..Just got back from Scotland then?……Say no more!

What's really needed, is an Enigma machine to sort this lot out!

Had this kit been all wood and POF…..It would have been a little cracker!

I've decided to make the model along the lines of JDAW……All battleship grey and full of rivets?

I fancy the decks to be grey to avoid having to paint a "neat edge" along the deck

JDAW had wooden decks and looked quite odd?
