Hmm.. will have to investigate. Never thought about it, not seen an underwater view of a sternwheeler.. Rudders after the wheel..must be a bit tricky to build?

Must surf for "model boat sternwheelers" and see what comes up.

          Ask Bob the Abell, Ashley!

Bob has built a stern wheeler in the past, the "Wilton Castle" and one of our club members was the captain!.

Captain William Goodall…….Old Bill…….Said that the rudders on Witon Castle were like barn doors!

He said the boat was frightfully unstable!

Thinking aloud……..What would the effect be, if I drilled holes in the paddle blades?

I like to see the water foam as the paddles rotate…..ie……The Waverley effect?

Might try that after the newness has worn off!

My first thought is that you would reduce the drive from the blades. Maybe if the blades where fixed so that they enter the water closer to the horizontal rather than vertical it would cause enough turbulence in the water to produce bubbles. Second ,really silly thought, why not have a small air pump on board producing bubbles below the waterline close to the paddles. I think I may have had too many cups of coffee!!

                  Hello Terry

Can't possibly forsake the feathering action!

Don't really mind losing some blade efficiency

I've already thought about a bubble maker

What Gareth is referring to, is his photo of a hamster powered boat, which looked so realistic, I actually threatened to report him to the RSPCA!

Did I have egg on my face!

                      Sorry Gareth

                      Bob…….Must go to Specsavers

                          Hello Bob,

Here is a picture of the ballast in the rear section of mine. The front ballast is behind the front bulkhead and I can only asume it is similar. As previous conversation, mine was a refurb and not a new-build,. I have removed the rx and batteries for this photograph.

Earlier in this thread some discussion took place about this kit. From research it would appear that the Glasgow was Graupners (kit) spin-off from the free download plan Strongbow which is readily available on tinternet.

                          Tony.

Your blue ballast looks strange stuff?

Found the Strongbow plan………It certainly looks very much like Glasgow

I had no idea this free plan website existed…….Looks very interesting

                              Hello Bob,

The ballasts blue colour seems to have been hightlighted in the photograph, which was taken outside. In lesser light conditions the colour is more of a grey, hence my thoughts that it is some kind of a cement/mortar mix.

It certainly looks strange stuff to me too!

Progress has been a little slow of late, waiting for ballast inf etc and a suitable battery

Then I remembered the old Slo Mo batteries which I had forgotten about!

Ideal for the job!……..12 volt too………Ideal?

                                  batt pos.jpg

I`ve cut a hole in the forward bulkhead and will also be a nice chunk of balance weight

Made good progress installing all the gear inside the timber skeleton, where it was easy to get at!………Before being mounted into the hull and was quite interesting in the process

I'm using the old fashioned Rheostat type that came with the motors

They are not to be recommended, but I've got quite a few in stock

If you PM me your address, I send you one…..FOC of course

It will need a servo to operate it.

It`s a bit primitive, but they do work……BOB

Bob. I can understand why you use these old rheostat boards, they are comfortably mechanical. Levers, wiper arms.. things moving from side to side.

i think it is exactly the sort of thing to use in something like the GE (assuming you used one in the GE?) The man himself I am sure would have approved.
