      Hello Brian

The stanchions are not a problem

Position them along the hull, then just fill the gaps between

They are shown on one of my build photos, very clearly

Make sure they stand up correctly

        There you go!

Use temporary planks to align the uprights

Great thanks, still a way off that, this the first time I've done a planked model so still looking carefully at the area around the stern first. Cheers

You could leave the planks showing, but then again many wooden boats were treated, after caulking, with trowel cement to smooth the hull. OK, It never lasted long, but it did make for a very smooth shiny hull straight off the chocks.

            Cheers,

            Martin

image.jpegimage.jpegimage.jpegI'm using pine planking that I cut myself, quite rough sawn, well soaked, it bends and flexes easily and has gone on very well. I'm using elastic bands to hold them in place, and I was putting them on so tightly that they were forming Lille depressions in the bottom edge of the planks! I can only fit one each side per day in order to let the glue and the wood dry out. I intend to use Halfords fibre glass kit to seal the inside of the skin, then sand the outside, leaving edges and the grain visible. The model is supposed to be painted, but if I get a nice finish I might just varnish it.

Ok the planks have gone fairly easily so far but it is becoming hard to get them to line up now. Is this where I have to start shaping the planks? If yes, can anyone suggest a straightforward way of doing this, I've seen an article in MB about marking plank widths then fixing a plank and filling in the gap.p1030115.jpg

                    Hello Brian

The planking is coming on well

There's no short cut to a planked hull…….Just plane each pair of planks to suit and take your time

The stern is a tricky area……Just follow the formers

Can we see a more pictures please?

I fitted a motor and it was a nice feature to have…….What about you?

Stud 1.jpegBut I'm now getting to the tricky parts of the planking… I have fitted a full length plank from bow to stern, and I aim to fill the gaps to the existing planks, then work towards the keel. The idea is (I hope) to keep the bows and stern looking nice and symmetrical.Port 1.jpeg

Stern planks.jpegHad to use 3 substantial filler planks and one small wedge on each side, but it seems to have worked and the hull appears nicely symmetrical.Bow planks.jpeg

image.jpegNot looking too bad, some minor lumps and bumps, a a little bit of filler applied. I have realised that I was soaking the pine planks for too long, so they were quite swollen when I fixed them in place, then when they dried out they shrank away from each other, leaving very small gaps! Fortunately it will be sealed inside with fibre glass and epoxy resin, and painted on the outside, so will end up water tight.image.jpeg

Boldly going where I have never I have never been before…. Working on the bottom planking, put in a full length intermediate, then the filler planks next.image.jpeg

                                      Hello Brian

It's a good idea to fit a few planks close to the keel now

It will make the planking look neater and easier to sand

Pleased that you are enjoying the build

It's really time to decide whether or not you will be fitting a motor?……….I prefer a motor every time on my scale sail boats……..It's very handy to get out of trouble or even find the wind!

Can't remember the ballast weight, but if you rummage in my build gallery, you will get a good idea

I think it was about 9lb……..And it is 9lb
