The planking is a big job to tackle

Hi all, I had shelved my model for the spring allotment campaign, it was just about the same stage as yours Steven, can you post a close up of the stern as I am trying to get a better impression of what it should look like. Cheers, B

                    Hello Brian

How`s your build getting on these days?

Did you sort the transom area out?

                    Bob

The stern is a pain. Brian… I will post a pic of it. But you need to be plum level and true it's a 3 dimensional thing, and if your'e out on any centres you'll have a bit of giggling to do…

My problem is getting more obechi, my local supplier had 5 strips! and I'm still waiting for him to get it in….

I had the added problem of involvement in other activities, when I came back to the boat, the keel had warped, stem and stern were totally out, I should have put the lead in before I left it…. I did learn one thing though, when you throw a keel at a wall step to the left a little, and when it bounces back at ya i"tl miss….frown but eventually I got to this stage..trnsm web-2.jpg

The pic above needs a little finishing, but now I'm fired to finish it, the new keel is pitch pine and the rest is mahogany, it will be a reminder of my little error, I can only get 9×3 obechi, and it's a little short so I'm having to scarf joint it…

You can get obechi sheet and strip by mail order or on-line from SLEC – they have an advert in the column just to the right of this one (under Airtek's). I've used them for donkey's years and never had a bad or broken piece yet.

Buying planking will cost you a small fortune

If you have access to a Band Saw or a Circular Saw, you can make your own planks from the cheap timber stripwood from your local wood shop

Don`t remove too much of the saw marks as you require a scale finish

In the future I will get a good rip saw and or band saw, but i want to try and support my local model shop, it's been going years and the two guys in it have forgotten more than most people know, it would be a great shame to loose them, they are a good resource at present.

But cheers for the thought Dave,I'll look at them for other bits, and you'r right Bob it's a more cost effective way of creating your strip…One for the future.

My local shop is called Phil's, in north shields, the two lads that work there specialise in ships and airplanes, Phil who owns the shop once made a ship out of silver for a shipbuilders client.

I've been looking at bandsaws/scrollsaws, dremell do a nice little scrollsaw, but I want something of quality, (buy cheap buy twice) as grandpa used to say…

I have looked on line and can't find 1220mm (48"&nbsp lengths of any suitable timber such as basswood or lime wood for the planking, I have some 1000mm lengths (10×3 mm) for the lower planking, but the first few planks at deck level need to be longer. Did someone suggest cutting 10×3 planks from pine? Would that be suitable and would the change to lime wood lower down be visible?

                                          Hello Brian

If you fancy the exotic woods, you could get a slab from a quality timber merchants and cut it up yourself

That's what I did with the Obechi for my build

I would recommend you go to the local DIY shop and select the planks that are straight and free of knots etc

But you still have to cut it yourself.

When planking, start at the bows and leave about 2" surplus at the stern. This can be used for twisting the planks with a clamp

You wouldn't notice any change in woods, as the hull is painted

                                            Brian

SLEC advertise non-standard timber cutting. If you're not able to select and cut the stuff yourself then you might give them a ring. They are very nice people – I've known Ian and Trish for over 40 years.

                                              Brian.

You don't need long lengths, as you can scarf joint over a frame, that's what I'm having to do, as I can only get 36" lengths, harder work, but nothing seems to run smooth for mefrown

                                              Steve.

Had to remove some of the frames to realign them, and then fix the first plank on each side. I have bought some lime wood planking, and cut some longer pine strips for the upper planks.

image.jpegimage.jpegCheers Bob, been busy sailing a real boat over the summer, I have been going over the plans, see pics below, and I'm a bit confused about the stanchions being mortised into the "cover board". But as far as I can see the gutter boards fill the gaps between the stanchions, and the ply deck cover with planking on top stops at the edge gutter?? Am I missing something?
