I was browsing in my local Pound Shop and noted a large packet of wooden plant labels but identical to lolly sticks. I was about to cut some thin ply strips to form a soldering jig, to manufacture some screen guards for my Canadian Logging Tug. So I purchased these instead. 2mm thick X 10mm wide. Not sure what timber they are but very smooth and straight. Would possibly do a decent deck planking job.

          Hi David

Mostly these sticks / labels are made from Poplar and apart from length they would be great for deck planking.

          Hope this helps

Thinking about it, lolly sticks must be made to a decent standard and of a reasonable quality wood to prevent splintering and wotnot.

You could usefully use used lolly sticks and your boat would smell of Strawberry or lemon….

Would lolly sticks smell of fivers?

                  Hi All

I find the Waitrose & Costa Coffee stirring sticks are essential to everyday modelling

Also kids craft shops sell sticks say 25nr in a pack for £1.00

                  Regards Ray

I’ve used the stirrers supplied by Greggs in the construction of a boat display base… Nice coffee as well!

All the coffee shops do stirrers, worth collecting them, had a few funny looks when i asked for the ones out of the bin!!! but got over 70, look good for planked decks etc, stain them with cold tea, leaves a nice colour, them laquer them after sanding

I used coffee stirrers and the long kitchen matches for the 'teak' wheelhouse on my tug. The matches are an ideal 3mm square and 150mm long, most stirrers, Bar-B Q skewers, lolly sticks and tongue depressers are available in 99p shops, they are all brilliant for modelling. They will all stain really well using Rustins or Furniglass spirit stains.

                        Ron.

But what about the splinters getting into your tongue?

Bought 1000 stirrer sticks from Amazon for about a fiver. Excellent for simulating planking on bridge structures etc, and also avoids coffee stains and funny looks in Costa.

Ian. Now that is a reasonable amount of stirrers to have to do something with and at a reasonable price.
