          Hello Steve

I'm an old petrol head and might be able to help, can you post some pictures of your engine and try to include any manufacturers information that might be cast or printed on the engine.

Hello I'm having problems getting them on here if you send me your email I will do it that way otherwise all I know about the engine is that it' a adcolantic made by a company called impex in the south of England and they did a marine and aero version

              Hi All,

I was bought an Impex 35cc in 1974 for my eighteenth birthday a water-cooled 2 stroke recoil starter, like your first car I wished I never sold it ! Company was in Brighton. I put it in modified Sea Queen, it went well B&W picture in my album.

              Regards Ray

For my first throw of the dice.

It looks like a 30cc unit with lots of bits missing but this is only to be expected as Steve is converting it to electronic ignition.

Steve needs to know what type and how much oil to put in the sump.

                      OMG

Looks weird? Does it have a sump? overhead cam shaft, belt driven looks like the early HP aero engines, before push rod operated valves became popular. I would still run it on 2 stroke mixture say 50 – 1

                      Regards Ray

Hello Ray yes it has a sump the sump is linked to the valves so the top is lubricated with oil vapour and from the little I have found out on the interweb it runs on straight petrol

                          Steve

It is a 4 stroke engine and runs on straight petrol I'm not sure if its ok with modern unleaded petrol and I'm still trying to find out its ideal octane (but I strongly suspect that it will be fine)

Still trying to bottom the oil / sump questions

                            Hi Guys,

I thought the o!d leaded petrol helped lubricate the engine, do the older classic cars have an additive? To lubricate the works?

                            Regards Ray

                              Ray

Tetraethyl lead was added to petrol to help reduce engine knocking, boost octane and help reduce wear to the valve seats

                                Hello

Not that I am an expert in these matters but why is the engine called an Adcolantic ? Is this to do with it's original builder or designer, or the way in which it operates? Would be very interested to find out.

Assuming that it is a four stroke overhead valve engine then it's upper lubrication system must be force fed via an oil pump. The crankshaft could possibly run in a sump of oil and be fitted with a dipper, but this is really ancient technology. However, the camshaft needs a good supply of oil to prevent it from seizing and this cannot be supplied any other way than via a pump. You cannot just dob the camshaft with an oil can, fire it up and expect it to run for any length of time. The days of hand lubricated open valve gears are long gone.

Keep searching for answers. Kind regards.
