Just because its under the water doesn't mean it ceases to exist.

Stern drives would have been an excellent solution to both the angle of dangle and weight distribution in the boat and far from a moustache it would have complimented the design with an enigmatic smile.

But I accept that such technology was very rare back when Alan Burnard did his first designs but I still think he missed a trick by keeping the engines in line with the shafts as the size of the propellers dictate the drive angle, he could have positioned the engines and shafts at 2 – 5 degrees by turning the engines horizontally 180 degrees and mounting the gearbox below the engine (like the early Minis)

Like putting three 300 HP outboards on the stern, it's just right !!!

          Hello Harry

That's an intriguing thought and there is plenty of room on those wide ars-d transoms and just think how much internal space would be released, far better for a canal cabin cruiser.

DM is now having a meltdown! cheeky

But I don't think that I could bring myself to put outboards on the back of a Fairey, those type of engines belong on the back of everyday plastic boats and ribs.

As far as I can make out, the first commercially-available stern-drive units were the Volvo Penta Aquamatics in 1959. History of stern drives

I've not been able to confirm it but I would imagine that the cost of fitting two of them would have been prohibitive c/w that of straight-drives and convention waterscrews. Fairey owners were almost by definition from the upper-echelons of the disposable income scale but they weren't all millionaires.

Anyway it's all purely academic because, irrespective of what the most efficient option for propulsion might have been when the full-size was designed, it didn't have stern drives fitted…….and the earth isn't flat, either.

                    High Ashley

No north of Watford is where you enter Shangri La and north of Stoke is where you enter Gods own country.

In the North West we think that civilisation ends at Watford and that anything further south are the Bad Lands containing the lawless tribes of pinstriped peoples called The Bankers and The Civil Servants, not to be confused with the brightly coloured tribesmen of The Bad Golfers whose battle cry of 'Fore…cks sake missed again' strikes fear into greensmen everywhere.

We call these ancient and lawless lands Sub Burbia

Its odd, isn't it, although the manicured lands of Sub-Burbia are a teeny bit north from here (Surbiton), we were taught the opposite regarding Watford.

To be honest, I thought that's where they built Hadrian's wall?

Anyway… we digress over the thread title.

Some Faireys were fitted with sterndrives, particularly where hulls were sold for completion by other yards for customers and to Dell Quay for their Ranger.

Fairey actually designed a drive in 1957 which consisted of an engine and integrated propulsion unit which steered and looked like an outboard motor leg but due to technical problems it was scrapped. So Fairey well understood that the traditional shaft and prop system had its limitations and compromises in certain situations and designs of boat.

Alan – 12 degrees really isn't that steep. At lower speeds the amount of lift generated won't be that great and at higher speeds once on the plane it will have very little effect if the weight distribution is right as the front part of the boat can't be pushed into the water, rather like skimming a stone!

                            Chris
