20210730_153406.jpgSome interior parts have received a coat of green. Very, very Green, but it's the correct colour according to the Colin Archer museum. George20210730_153455.jpg

i like the colour George…….very traditional of the age of the ship.

i was told many many years ago by my grand dad why so many houses close to the sea had the darker green paint on the woodwork.

Apparently it had a much higher lead content than the other colours so as not to degrade as quickly in the salt air. it also contained the similar anti fouling agent as used in green lead anti fouling used on ships, before the application of red lead anti fouling later on……all stems from the stuff they painted on to wooden ships to stop wood boring worms.

Something i remembered and stored in my feeble brain, and still remember………but can't remember what i had for last nights tea, lol.

I understand that in the 'old days', many farmhouse kitchens were painted some shade of blue. It was noticed that this kept the flies away! It was first thought that flies did not like the colour. When it was discovered that flies were colourblind, it was suggested that the poisonous lead in the blue paint was what was keeping them away!

Nobody seemed to mind that the PEOPLE using the kitchens were in physical contact with the blue paint 24/7. Anyway, the water pipes were probably lead too in those days. You can't win!

Will be sloshing on some more lead-free, water-based colour over the next few days while waiting for doll's house hinges, and another order from CMB which has been in the post for over a month. I think I'll have to re-order.

20210802_221309.jpgTook a 'Richard Simpson' style break from painting and made the cockpit (or steering well) gratings in the last 2 days. The glazing for the compass-viewing porthole is also in place. Also made two gratings which are to be place on deck P&S of the steering well. Tried to stain them 'weathered teak' but that did not work too well so they are now stained in 'new teak'. The gratings are not a part of the kit, they were 'flown in' from CMB. The porthole through which the helm can view the compass has also be 'glazed'. The compass I ordered from CMB a month ago has been lost in the post. Re-ordering tomorrow. Sorry about the sideways photo. sad

Had some trouble with photo format recently. The photos on the phone camera were suddenly in a format called HEIC. How they got changed from JPG I do not know. After a lot of 'digging' in my phone's internals I finally found the button to change back to JPG.

Anyway the interior 'skelleton' framework has now received a coat of 'greener-than-green'. Must get the R/C and batteries connected up and working before fitting the interior sections back into the hull.

The cockpit well is also in production and -in addition to the grating- has received a glazed porthole and raised top edges to help keep the waves out. The kit/plans only show a 4mm top edge/rim. Now it's about 10mm.

I expect to used a week or so to get the R/C installed and working.

The wood for the cockpit well included in my particular (old) kit is mahogany coloured. I therefore used some mahogany stripwood left over from the Fisher build to build up the edges to look more like the original, AND give better protection against filling the cockpit with water!

The edges are increased from 4mm high to nearer 10mm. This might interfere with the tiller where it passes over the aft edge of the cockpit well, but that will be easy to remedy.

I have a photo of the original, but this was found on the web and is not in JPG format, so I can't 'beam it up'.

                  George

PS. Just remembered….took a photo of the PC screen to get a JPG format photo. So here is the original cockpit too.20210804_100445.jpg

Did some test fitting of interior components today. Nav station installed, simulating the unit in the present museum CA. The original photo comes up sideways no matter how much I rotate it on th PC. Had to take a photo of the PC screen instead.20210805_222934.jpg

The heads door is a bit kinky with the porthole feature. It is however glazed in frosted green. Door frame still to be edged to make it less draughty! Some paint damage occured while re-positioning (hacking with a knife and saw) the heads unit.

Hello George, you are making a very nice special model of great interest.

The furniture etc is fascinating and the green is easy on the eye too

I hope you have room for a motor drive?

It would be nice to see your model chugging about on windless days etc

I must say that I am impressed by Cornwall Model Boats……

An order which CMB sent to me on the 28th June has not been delivered to me in Norway. Orders usually get here in about 10 days -as was the case with a later order sent from them on 20th July. CMB are very kindly re-sending the order (and including a couple of 'upgraded' items) completely free of charge.

Given that it is most certainly not their fault that the order has disappeared, I consider this to be exceptionally generous of them.

                                Hi George,

Not a Colin Archer issue, but many moons ago we were discussing the control of the Genoa sheeting on the Fisher, well I have seen a track system used on a yacht at a meeting I went too on Wednesday in Surreysilver 3.jpg, using a split tube and winch controlled line and traveller seemed brilliant idea to me

Sorry I forgot to ask the gentleman's name !!

                                Regards Ray

Hi Ray, looks like a smart way to do it! I have in fact seen a large flush-deck yacht on Youtube with a similar system. This seemed very smooth in operation. I think I googled "model yacht genoa operation" or something of that nature.

Main advantage is, you only need ONE servo to to do it! Disadvantage is, that you cannot let out the sail clew to fly loose for sailing downwind. The clew follows, and is allways the same distance from the track. With two separately controlled servos, you can let them both out for downwing sailing.

However, to use the track system on the Fisher, would not look very 'scale' as it would entail routing the track quite far forward to get around the mast, then across the top of coachroof (which needs to be removeable to get at the swithches/fuses).

The track would also have to be routed outboard and well aft of the mainmast shrouds too….ugly.

My system looks reasonably scale I think -and it even snags slighlty (as in real life!). Although the tracks and sheet blocks are rather larger-than-life in size.

You will remember in our discussions on this -ages ago- I mentioned that my grey cell was under considerable duresscrying 2 trying to work out a suitable system laugh.

Thanks though, for the info. The photo shows that for the right type of model, it's not that difficult to achieve some sort of positive genoa control.

                                  Cheers, George.

PS. Can anyone tell me what I've done recently to start receiving 'allerts' when someone posts on my thread/s?

I don't mind, but I'm not aware of what buttons I've pshed to make this happen. Or is this just a new Forum-feature?

Had to make a hole in a bulkhead to get at the screws for the hinge on the heads door! I'll hang a photo over the plug.

Richard's tip about Doll's house furniture produced not just hinges…I could not resist the brass parafin storm lamps. Bought 3! One of them will probably be modified a bit and suspended from a cross beam.

Made an attempt at the companionway steps. It looks like it's dangerously placed in mid air, but that's where the companionway opening will be when the deck is in place…I hope.

I don't think the 'rivet counters' would accept that Ray. I'd be getting hate-mail for sure.angry The plastic hull is bad enough. A see-through deck would get me excluded, BUT I plan to open the deck below the skylight and I'll hinge the companionway hatch. Though there still won't be much view of the interior.

I do have another Colin archer kit in the cellar store. If I ever start building it, I definately will not try another interior. It's driving me nuts.face 14

Fitted the compass in it's 'pigeonhole'. The porthole surround which I made two weeks ago is a bit on the large side I think, so something might well 'happen' to that before launch. The whole compass thing was just an afterthought which ended up being a main event 20210819_152504.jpgwhich -as Ray gently hints- will hardly ever be seen!

I wouldn't bother with the rest of the model, just display the interior!

                                                    Lovely looking job George.
